Most desired Wildcat?

What do you all feel is some of the most desired wildcat cartridges. I am planning on rebarreling a couple rifles and my thinking was that i could chamber for some type of wildcat that requires brass to be fireformed. My thinking is i can shoot the load and sell the fireformed brass, ie. chamber for a 22-250AI and shoot standard 22-250 loads for my shooting and then sell the ackley formed brass. The last ackley i owned, the fireforming loads shot just as good if not better than my Ackley loads.

I would think that the "Improved 6BR's" would top the list>>>BUT there are Hydroform dies that vendors are using that don't place all the stress on the brass that actual fireforming does. Then you have the "Shehane", which is easily fireformed at a 300-600 yard match. Then you get into "hunting" wildcats that probably (not sure) do not have hydroforming dies for them. Of those, the 6mm Rem A.I., .257 A.I., 30-06A.I. I would imagine are the most prevalent. Let's hear from others who can give us more / better insight.

I don't know if I'd call an Ack.Imp a wildcat as you can fire factory ammo to form it (I know a bit picky). I look at changing caliber/base to shoulder/shoulder angle/shoulder dia./neck length/neck thickness etc. Those are the things that take time and money (components)to do, but are pretty individual to each shooters wants and needs. Graybeck WildCats (or Brass) did (maybe still does haven't checked lately)formed A.I. brass and other calibers using (propane) I believe. One problem I see with it though is NOT having the proper head stamped brass (may be a legal issue there). I also know that the 220 russ. is reformed to 6 PPC ALL the time...so take it for what that's worth...

Hard to sell brass from a different chamber but the most popular i build hands down is 280ack. Then 250, 223, 22-250, 30-06, 257, 243, 6mm somewhat in that order

Do all your intended rifles have a standard bolt faces? And do you prefer a longer range cartridge?

If not, I know 20 VarTarg would be a good candidate. That brass sells faster than a free hundred dollar bill. Shoots just as accurately with the 23 degree shoulder of the 221 FB parent case as it does with the formed 30 degree shoulder. Really fun round too.

For a standard bolt face. I would choose the 6mm AI. Lot of guys have them and love them. Brass is harder to come by. It always sells in a heartbeat when listed in the classifieds. Will shoot just as good with unformed shoulder too.

Fred -

Howdy !

IMHO:
From what I've read on these forums, wildcats like 6 X 47 Lapua and 6 Creedmoor are popular.
At the same time, wildcat shooters may very well still want to form their own wildcats cases themselves......perhaps even for cases that have moved from wildcat status to formed case availability.

They'll want to have immediate control over important features like neck wall thickness and concentricity; to name a few.

Just some thoughts...

I would say that if you used Lapua brass and did it the "correct" way, FF Dasher brass should sell very, very well.

I'm surely impressed with the two .280 Rem AI's I had done. Both shot factory as well as the FF ammo very well.
Took a few deer and elk out to 400 yds all one shot kills with zero drama. Took quite a few more 100-200 yds. Piece of Cake.

Bought a 1955 Win 70 in .30-06 at a show twenty back. I had zero use for another .30 Cal hunting rifle but for $350 I couldn't resist that rifle. So it sat in my safe forever. PJ Hart of Hart rifle barrels hunts the Ranch south of us. he was over one day and spied that M-70.

I told him the story...I was more than happy with my .280 AI or my pre 64 in .300 H&H.

He just took a .257 Roberts AI barrel off a customers pre 64 as the guy claimed it wouldn't shoot. Long story short he installed that barrel on my gun. Fitting it to my stock perfectly, down to the rear sight "hump".

Even my FF loads grouped well. An inch or less. With 100 or 115 gr Nosler hunting bullets it will group five into an inch or less at 100 yds easily.

With 90 gr Sierra rockchuck loads it's taken a few dozen chucks as well as two coyotes out to 400 yds.

All that said.....Add the .257 Roberts AI to the list too.
