Most common turn neck diameter for 6ppc?

NC/Br Shooter

Silver $$ Contributor
What is the most common neck diameter for a TURN neck chamber in ppc? 6 ppc.
I understand ther is a no turn. But for turning necks, what is the most widely used?
.268?

Reason I ask this is because It seems to me if there's a holy Grail diameter in neck turning in ppc It should work for Br,Bra, ect, ect.

Thanks for looking

.268 is probably the most common neck dia for 6PPC. I also know of several guys running 6BRAs that have. 268 necks.

6PPC shooters started switching to thicker necks in order to hold boattail bullets in place while shooting compressed loads. When I started Benchrest it was mostly .262 and .261 necks.

However there’s nothing magic about a .268. I’m currently running a No-Turn in both the BRA and PPC and very happy with both.

Here’s a 3 shot group at 100 yards shot with my No-Turn. Billy Stevens shot the group with my rifle. Personally it’s the smallest 3 shot group I think I’ve ever seen.

Before someone points out that 3 shot groups don’t mean anything. This barrel has already won the 3 Gun at the NBRSA Nationals and the Tac Driver. I pulled it out for one yardage at the Nationals this year and it came in 2nd, so I put it up to take to the World Benchrest Championships .

For those with Ballistic-X the caliper is set to 1 inch

Well I do believe that answers my question.
Thanks Bart.

Has the ( no turn, )( turn neck) subject been debated to death on here?

Well here's another question
Would a turn neck case be more consistent in the grand skeem of things? Say for 100rds, think a turn neck case would be more consistent for bullet release?
( I'm not trying to talk myself into turning cases just yet)

Turned verses No Turn has been debated a good deal. You’ll need to decide for yourself.
Not too many have actually shot both. Logically you’d think turned has to be better, but that’s not what I’ve seen on paper.

Starting out I think I’d recommend turning necks. It’s a good skill to have. Turned or No Turn the key is having enough room for the bullet to release.

I tried to measure it with On Target........
using a 6mm it's tough to measure
using a 22 recital, it is TINY! The best this rookie can measure is somewhere between .007 and .012", again trying to center a 22. It would be handy to have a single hole to look at in comparison.
With the 6mm recital, it is a zero......

Great shooting!

For 6ppc-What Neck size would be consider a no turn neck? .269, .270 .271. 272??? using 220 Russian Lapua Blue box brass......And if you no Gold box??

Ok, all that sounds, SOUND.

So, in the case of jamming bullets.
It really doesn't really make sense to have a turn neck chamber if you plan to load at jam or in further then does it? I guess I'm asking, Doesn't it kinda defeat the purpose of you end up seating at in the lands.
?

Preciate all the feedback.

Still gotta have ample clearance, of course but you bring up a good point. One worth discussion. I think you get it! I run almost everything at some point of jam and have a hard time seeing tune changes with neck tension changes. Yes, I know you've gotta be able to shoot the difference but I've been doing this for a while now and this is my finding on this, too. It seems to be more clear to me when jumping but that's one reason I prefer to jam. I feel like it at least minimizes the affect of neck tension. YMMV.

By the definitions that I go by “Jam” is as far into the rifling that the bullet can be seated. If you seated the bullet past Jam, the bullet would be pushed back into the case back to Jam when the bolt is closed. Jam is simply a reference point Just like Touch.

Jamming or Jumping really doesn’t matter about the neck diameter.

Maybe I’m just not understanding your question.

Iv just now started looking into neck tension. I should have by now been paying it more attention. With all the talk about what works and what don't, I had came to an idea, that maybe I could run a test. 2 th, 4 th, 6 th, ect,ect neck tension. But that requires having all the right bushings and wouldn't be that difficult to set up. I'm sure it's been done.
And, like you said, you got to be able to shoot the difference. I'm not good yet.
But it seems to me if I wanted to test neck tension,
Wouldn't it be best to jump a good ways?
Iv found tune with one barrel at 40 thou, jump.

What other ways can you test neck tension?

I shoot a .269 neck.
I you look back through the archives of Benchrest.com, from the lat 1990’s, you will see that I was one of the first shooters to get away from the .262/.263 neck.

I had ordered a new reamer from Dave Kiff, (I had been using the tried and true JGS 1045), and he asked me why we turned so much brass off of our 6PPC necks made from the Lapua 220 Russia. I gave him the story as it had always been told.
I then told him I would call him back in a few minutes. I necked up a Lapua 220 Russian and seated a bullet. I measured the neck of the loaded round and decided a .269 would be just right to turn a minimum amount off of the necks.

I called Dave back and told him to go with the .269.

If I had it to do over, I would have went with a .270. The blue box is a tad thicker than the old Gold Box.

The reason for going to .269 was for no other reason than ease of turning necks. No other.

Certainly you could test @ .002 increments but I have found a difference in group size with only changing .001 per increment. Testing @ jam or jump I have seen the difference as well.
