Most accurate powder measure

is there a powder measure that can consistently drop Varget to within .04 gn? If not, what is the most consistent Varget powder measure?
Ben

I think you are hard pressed to find one to your specs. you should try one of the electronic auto dispenser measures. then trickle the final amount.

You'll never find a powder measurer to drop to .04 gr.

Most consistent, throw short and use an Omega to trickle up on an A&D FX-120i. You'll get .02

This is the exact combination and process I am using today, just looking to see if I am missing anything.

There is the Prometheus Powder measure. It drops charges reportedly within 1 kernel of Varget. But it is very expensive and there is a long waiting list. The guy that makes them is brand cole. His name has shown up on here a few times. I think his contact info is on a thread on snipers hide. I haven't used one, but I've seen it used.

If you want to have accurate and consistent powder drops using a powder measure more important than the powder measure itself is finding a powder that meters well. Unfortunately Varget does not fall in to that category....like trying to put a square peg in a round hole. Ray

the Culver conversion of Lyman - I have 3 made by Homer and I understand they are being made now by someone else,

I can throw any short stick, short cut or smaller to less than you are looking for. I loaded some h4198 and lt32 yesterday weighing each drop, 35 cases, 20-lt32 and 15 h4198, all within .1 gr

Bob, check the decimal point on his requirement.
Also, my hats off to you throwing that close......but just goes to show how important it is to develop the proper throwing technique. I've not been able to get better than +/- 1.5 gr on the best metering powder after 15 years. I believe you have me beat in experience by a good margin.

I have a Harrel's Precision powder measure. With ball powders it is RIGHT ON THE MONEY! However, after that, the accuracy of each throw deteriorates in direct proportion to the size and weight of the kernels of powder. "Regular" , as in NON-SSC IMR 7828 dispenses the worst, with H1000 next in line. I use it to throw a weight 1/2 grain BELOW my target weight and trickle up with an Omega into an FX-120I.. This combo works excellent. Remember, the Harrels is one of the BEST measures on the market and you can't trust it past ball powders! Always use a good scale!

The technique Homer taught me back in the late 60's to get the best out of his measures was the following:

fill the hopper, keep it a minimum of 1/2 full -
after filling, throw a minimum of 5 charges doing the following -

double tap the handle at the top of the cycle to settle the powder in,
drop the charge and tap the handle again at the bottom of the rotation to settle the powder after the drop
KEEP THE HARDNESS OF THE TAPS AS CLOSE TO THE SAME AS POSSIBLE!!!!
after the 5 before loading -

check the next throws on a scale using the same technique, if they are +/- .1gr with fine powder then good, if they are higher with stick(4895 etc) but consistent then drop trickle the last few tenths. these 4198 etc are within .2gr max deviation

this has worked for me and others who knew Homer for years,

Bob
