most accurate bullet

I am at the moment shooting the 87 grain v max through my 243 it produces good groups and is accurate enough for my deer and fox shooting needs.i am seriously looking into purchasing a 6mm br and was wondering what bullet would be the most accurate to shoot i have heard the bergers are very good but have no experience with them on game.any advice would be greatly appreciated as i am new to the 6mm br .thanks

I built a 6br especially for coyote hunting with the odd outing for gophers. I have a 1-12 twist and have shot the 68, 70 and 80 bergers, the 65, 75, and 87 Vmax, and the 70 SMK. The bullet that I got the best accuracy out of was the 75 Vmax. It was a close second with the 68 berger. It is hard for us to get the Bergers here in Canada so I am quite pleased that my br likes the 75 Vmax as they are easy to get here. This set up should cause havoc on the coyote population this winter here in Alberta. The 5 shot group on the steel was shot @ 550 yards with the 75 Vmax as well.

Andy, all I can say is WOW. Is that small group 3 shots or 5? Either way, impressive.

Some gun you have there. I have an 8-twist 6BR and have been hoping to get the 75 V-Max to shoot as well as the heavies. What's your seating depth and neck tension? I was running about 32.2gr Varget so maybe I should hot up the load.

Maybe you can post a pic of your rifle too.

Wolf,Jack), the Berger 80s were super-accurate in my gun, BTW. 5-shot groups in the high ones, low twos.

thanks alot for the advice i cant get over how small your groups are that is incredidble my 243 used too do half an inch with homeloads but the barrel is getting warn out now am thinking its time for a new rifle.

Mod,

The group on the paper is a 3 shot group. I shot 3 shot groups to find an initial load with the varget, all at .010 into the lands. My gun has a .269 neck, I turn to .267 with the bullet seated and use a .266 neck bushing. I have not tried any of the tighter bushings.

Andy.

Hi Andy, I too have a 6br. It is equiped with a gailard barrel
with 1:12 twist. It is chambered for no neck turning, I'm not sure
of the neck dia. Anyway this rifle was intended for chucks out to
400 yd. I have the geatest accuracy with sierra 70 gr. blitsking.
I have made 5 shot groups under 0.2 in. Also have had good luck with hornady 65 gr v-max. However with the 75 gr. I have had no luck. Maybe .50-.80 moa. I am hesitant to try the 87 gr.v-max thinking that the 1:12 twist will not stablize this bullet.
Have you had any luck.
FYI: The action on my rifle is an old sako l57 and the stock is walnut which I made myself, It is bedded with plastic aluminum.
and the scope is a B&L 4200 6-24 .

Thanks
Thane

There is nothing wrong with the 87 gr V-max I can get it to shoot pretty well in my gun appx .3 or less & can stay at about an inch to 300 meters..That said it really needs more speed to WHOMP EM at any range ...I've switched to the 80 gr berger MEF HP & I'm very happy with that bullets terminal effect to any range I can hit at mike in ct

I shoot the 87 Vmax in my 6MM Remington. I get great accuracy with this bullet. Varget is also the powder of choice with this set up. I have shot the 87 grain Vmax in my BR, but the accuracy was not there as compared th the 75 grain bullet. My 6mm Remington has a 1-10 twist.

For many years I shot nothing but Sierra. Then I got to hearing so much about custom bullets I had to try them, being the accuracy freak that I am, I had god results so I stayed with them. Then last year you couldnt buy a Berger bullet because of the lack of jackets. SO I went back to Sierra both the match kings and the varmit bullets. To make it short I will never buy a Custom bullet again, I cant tell a difference.
I went to the World benchrest shoot at Kelbys last Sept. as a ovserver and I swear I seen some Sierra Match KIngs in a Berger box.

Berger VLD'S are great varmint bullets they are accurate but tempermental if not seated correctly. I would get the 105 gr. VLD and have it seated so it touches the lands. The best accuracy you will get out of the 6mm BR is 300 yards and up when the VLD bullet stabilizes. If you are shooting under 300 yards I would recomend a 6mm PPC with a flatbased bullet. As far as brass Lapua is the best besides Norma which is expensive.

For powder I would recomend Hodgdon Varget because it is not affected by tempature as much as other powders and at lower velocites can produce amazing groups.

For a barrel I would recomend a 6mm BR Norma chamber with a no turn .272 neck so you will not have to do any neck turning. A 1 in 8 twist 26 inch barrel should take care of the 108 gr. bullet but the 6mm BR will work with shorter barrel lengths. For accuracy the barrel should be stainless steel because of the uniformity of the metal over chrome moly. I would recomend Benchmark barrels, also known as Cascade armory) of Arlington, WA as far as barrels they take the barrels from bars of steel and turn them into match grade works of art, these barrels are hand lapped and are extremly accurate. A barrel finished and put on your gun would be about $450.

The best places to get Berger VLD's is lock stock barrel or Bruno shooters supply.

My neighbour's hay fields are overrun with columbia ground squirrels. I have been mainly using a factory 204 ruger but I have dragged out my 6BR many times. I have found since I use the BR for f-class and our monthly 1000 yard shoots, I am very comfortable with using my same match load consisting of 105Amax on top of 30.5 of Varget in a 1:8 barrel.

Its utter predictability makes shooting out to 800 meters lots of fun. Ballistic gopher break dancing!

I used 87 gr Vmaxes in my 6mm Ackley 1 in 10 twist but they never came up to what I call good shooters. I changed to the 80 grain Fowler flat base and really like the accuracy they deliver to 350yards anyway. Coyotes sure as heck don't like em......nor do crows, it turns them into a puff of black feathers at 300....

used to shoot nothing but 87 v max in my 243 they were great and had good knockdown know only hunting with a 6mmppc and the 87 wont stabilise correctly in my 1 in 14 twist barrel so im told.am now shooting 65 grain v max they are really accurate out to 300 wich is as far as i shoot game and varmint am sure if i used a purely target bullet i would get more accuracy but i need something with stopping power have never lost any game with the v max .have seen foxes run even with perfect hits from a purely target bullet but the v max just drops em on the spot.

My old Pac-Nor 10 twist 6mm Ackley absolutely loves Jef Fowlers 80 grain flat base bullet. That bullet shoots better in that rifle than anything I 've stuck in it for a lot of years. For a match target bullet it will flat out lay a big dog down right now, but they are a little nasty even out to 318 yards where this coyote ran into one.

I had a SAKO Vixen in 6mm PPC and tried a number of different bullets and powders. I ended up using Nosler ballistic tips after building quite a number of ladders. The Nosler turned out to be the most acurate.
