Most Accurate 6mmBR Bullet Weight/Twist - Short Range

You might change some specifics, but I posted this long ago. Posting it once again.

Phil needs to quit yammering and start building.

1. Call Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply (763) 682-4296
2. Tell him that you want a starter rifle in no turn 6 BR for the 104-107 bullets.
3. Do what he tells you to do without oscillating all over the scope.
4. Put a Sightron 10-50 on it in Burris Signature Z rings.
5. Get a cheapie press, Redding Type S FL bushing die, a 266 bushing, Imperial sizing die wax, a Forster Micrometer seater die, K&M Expandiron with 6mm mandrel, Lee length trimmer with 6BR holder, a rocket-style chamfer tool, Ohaus 505-type balance, a cheap trickler, K&M priming tool and #2 Lee AutoPrime shell holder and a 6 BR shell holder for the press.
6. Buy Lapua brass, CCI 450 primers, Varget and 107 SMKs.
7. Buy electronic digital calipers. Mitutoyo is good but expensive.
8. Run the brass over the 6mm mandrel and FL size them before you load them the first time.
9. Buy a bipod or front rest and a rear bag that matches up.
10. Prime, flat side out, drop 30 grains of Varget and seat that SMK 12 thou into the lands.
11. Go shoot. Evaluate. Post specific, questions and incrementally apply fixes.
12. Measure your brass and trim to ~1.550. Chamfer inside and out. Go back to 10 and repeat.

Now, Phil, that leaves a bit out, but it does cover 90%. So, it's poop or get off the pot, dude. Seek to simplify, not complicate.

90% of what you wrote is already done, purchased or learned, and the remaining is applicable to Savage, an action I may not even use for the 6mmBR. I don't need a tutorial on reloading. There are reasons for where I am in my build(s), none of which I feel I am obligated to explain.

Phil3: i believe there is an inherent harmony between a bullet and twist rate. granted an 8 twist will shoot a 60 gr berger, but i firmly believe the best consistent accuracy comes out of a 14 tw barrel. i suspect this harmony exist for an 80 gr and a 12 twist, 105s/8 twist... my 14 tw 6 BR does wonders with bullets from 60 to 68 gr. thinking about a switch barrel with a 12 twist and shooting the 80 grainers. might go with a 6 BRX to increase the powder to get the extra velocity.

Phil3,
Ipreddick is absolutely correct. If you want as you originally stated, short range accuracy, go with a 14 twist. My 6BR with 14T , Lt-32, and a good 65-68 grain bullet will shoot nearly as well as my 6PPC.

Thanks all...I see where the general consensus is, a definite help and guide in selection of bullet/twist vs accuracy at my ranges. I really wish I could shoot further and have a real "need" for the 1:8, but not around where I live. - Phil

Rhetorical questions:

- is the most accurate short range 6 BR configuration with windflags and an experienced shooter the same as it is without/inexperienced?

- Would the normal short range configuration be any different if we were freed from the usual 10.5 lb and stock profile rules?

- Can you know what you want to shoot till you have got out there and shot some? How many people end up shooting the rifle they start with?

- What is "most accurate short range" anyway to someone that only knows the genre from behind a keyboard? What is the practical difference between, say, a rifle that can .200 agg and one that can .300 agg in Phil3's context? Would he not be better served with a versatile rifle vs a specialist?

I could go on. I offered to help Phil3, offered to sell him a safe queen that I have for a lot less than I have in it or he can build one. The silence was deafening.

So, no more, gentlemen, no more.

Phil, the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center is a world-class facility, with ranges to 1,000y. It's 103 miles from Whole Foods in San Ramon, just FYI. ;)

Along with the typical public facilities, they also host competition of all sorts, including F-Class, Palma, High Power, Metallic Silhouette, 600y and 1,000y benchrest, tactical rifle, and shorter range benchrest.

It is well worth a trip there. After shooting at such a facility, shooting at the closer ranges (geographically and target-distance-wise) is pretty ho-hum. 8)

Your rhetorical questions are not deserving of any kind of response, so won't.

In your 10/16/2013 offer to sell your Savage BVSS "safe queen" you said, "Let me know if you are interested". I wasn't. I don't care for the BVSS, I want to build my own, and am willing to spend more to do so. I did not respond because I am NOT interested. Prospective customers get to do that. With regards to "no more", thank you, it is appreciated.

I have been to the Sacramento facility a few times. It is 103 miles from my house. It IS a nice place! I shot at the 100 and 300 yard range with my AR15. Shot at the 1000 yard range in a BR match with a borrowed 65 lb. "open" class gun (I think that is the class) shooting a 300 Weatherby Magnum. This, in 100+ degree heat and horrible mirage, with of course...wind. I have never, ever shot that far, and remarkably did not come in last!

I would love to go the range that has distances from 400 - 1000 yards, but you must belong to a club to use it, and have at least two people present (shooter and target operator). I am trying to get hooked up with a club, but this has been a bit difficult. After a day of shooting, the drive back is exhausting! Last time I went with someone, and that helped.

I am not a competition shooter, despite the one event above, but not sure I can find any other way to shoot at that range unless it is a competition.
