More crap I don't need: Vintage Sniper - M40 Edition.

With the recent change to the CMP Vintage Sniper rules allowing Vietnam era rifles I figured I'd join in the fun.

I have my dads old Rem 722 that I completely worked over, trued everything, sleeved the bolt, etc. I've never had a proper project/rifle for it, but this will be it's new home.



Stock is black walnut, from eBay. (180 bucks shipped). The rules allow pillars and glass bedding. Still thinking about how I want to finish this stock... oil, or penetrating epoxy.

The gun this action came out of has a blind mag well... for the bottom metal I have here, is this what I need, or something else? Repeaters aren't my wheelhouse and I can barely spell BDL

I'd go with penetrating epoxy. That's my go-to stock finish now. Easy to make it look like an "oil" finish, yet tough as nails. If it's your first stock finish, stick with the oil. Almost idiot-proof.

I'm very comfortable with wood and finishing. I'm going epoxy. I've had good luck with total boat penetrating epoxy, sand it down, top coat with spraymaxx 2k clear, buff it.

The box you have looks like a bdl. So you should be good. I looked at the rules for the rifle and its pretty wide open. You can do a lot. I liked service rifle. Just wish there were more matches. This would be a fun build.

I'll leave it natural. I really wanted one I could rattle can a cool camo job on... but it seems like a crime on a nice piece of wood like that.

Thanks. Our club director has been emailing with the CMP about some of the rules. I expect them to change. They've already said they wont allow a kick-eez because that's not how the m40's were issued.

I'll be using a Triggertech Primary. It can be set to a good "factory as issued" weight if needed later.

Why not try something like aqua fortis (Nitric acid) on the stock?

Aaron what profile bbl did you use It seems that the Rem varmint contour is historically correct but I found plenty of images with a slightly heavier straight taper. I have a couple straight taper Schneider Bbls I’ve been hanging on to that I can finish@ .850 muzzle I don’t want to re contour to RV.

I haven't picked what I will personally use, yet. I have an M24 tight bore that's currently on another gun, that I believe I can make work without a ton of fuss. Or I have a couple HV's that would require a lot of fuss

Pictured is the one I built for my friend - It was a HV that I cut the tenon off, and then profiled down to .830 or so.

The grain looks good and straight. Should be a good one.

I contacted Brian Williams at the CMP since I am also working on a M40 replica for CMP competition and am unclear of allowable build details.
1. Minimum trigger pull is 2.5 lbs as for all US bolt sniper rifles used in CMP games.
2. Only metal or hard plastic butt plates are allowed.
3. No bolt extractor modifications are allowed.

After reading the specs and getting the response from CMP, I do not think that use of a Remington 722 receiver will be allowed. You might double check with CMP if you haven't done so already.

Might want to check on that action being legal. Rules specifically say 700 with no provision for 722. I know they are essentially the same but the rules have a lot left to interpretation as written but CMP rules committee has been providing added guidance as requested. Kinda like - any commercial 3-9x40 is accepted but now after I buy an optic and it is seen by a committee member the rule is changed to no target knobs and reticle restrictions…

That's all fine and I figured my action wouldn't be "legal" - Don't care, still gonna shoot and win, and let the old guys think I beat them because of an extractor.
