Montana

My crew is heading to Montana on friday......I don't need to be home for two weeks so I'll get my shooting in.....I sure hope it cools off a little bit at least.....I'll trade the oppressive Tennessee humidity for the dry Montana heat in a second anyway!!...lol Here's the tip of the ammo pile.....My main calibers are 6XC, 6mmAR, 223 AI and 204 Ruger....

I wasn't wanting to hijack the thread but since you asked....The 6xc is shooting 105 Berger VLD Hunting and 105 Amax......My 6mmAR is all 105 Berger VLD hunters.....223 AI is shooting 40 grain Vmax and 50 grain TNT's......the 204 will be eating 32 grain Vmax and last but certainly not least My Browning Xbolt Varmint/Target 308 will be slinging 172 grain Starke Red Prairie Varmint bullets (I have been waiting for the perfect time to shoot my dear Starke bullets since I can't get any more!) All that with some 22 lr and .357 mag (Coonan) for some casual shooting......Hopefully we won't run out!

Its not the humidity that gets you here, the sun is very powerful up here and will get you in trouble in a hurry if you don't respect it. My brother came out from Illinois and couldn't believe how hot the sun felt above 90 degrees. I can't handle the humidity back there though either. Better get your dogs shot soon, fires popping up all over.

Wear a long sleeved cotton shirt and a hat with a brim....you'll stay cooler.

Yup, if you plan on shooting either PD's or squirrels, at this time of year, shade is about as important as your water, rifle and ammo. The last time we shot Montana, if you didn't have a sun shade, you were most likely in your truck running the A/C instead of shooting when it got over 90*. It can be brutal.

This shot was taken during an epic squirrel outing in N. CA. In June it can easily get above 90* in the shade, so we all make sure we've got sun shades. Set up early in the morning, stay put all day and never move.....the way it should be all the time.

The squirrels seem to have a fresh crop of available targets that rotate every two hours. Great for us, not so great if you're a rodent.

The comments made about the humidity back east reminds me that now I'm into "Geezerhood", I can't enjoy any time spent east of the Rockies. I just can't stand that humidity, as it seems to suck the energy right out of me. So I stay where I belong, WEST of the Rockies! Besides, better shooting too. ;)

We just got back from Dighton Kansas at 6am this morning. I'm in North Florida. Weather in Kansas Tuesday was right at 100 degrees.

How many shot, hit, killed out of that many rounds? Average, round about, I'm curious to shooters success rate at this number of round count fired. Also minimum to maximum yardage?

I am an honest counter  and average around 50-60% depending on the wind and distance. About 90% of my shooting is with 20 cal. Min distance can be less than 50 yds, but vast majority is probably from 200-400 yds, depending on the shooting pressure they’ve seen.
We had some fun trying to tag one at 1082 yds, but wind was too much for a hit that day. I was holding nearly 12 ft windage with my 6BR to get close.
I have read and heard some say they shoot 90%+, and I could believe it under 200 yds and with no wind. I had one day where the max distance was around 200, shooting into light wind, where I shot 76%. My personal best is 396 hit dogs in one day. I only count them if I see them dragging something or die.:)

Thank you. This is an excellent reply and report. I learned things from answers like this and I do appreciate you posting. I watch you and others on here and value your input and information.

I am over on the hilly side in Butte. We have a ton of 'em this year.
Happy that you are having such a good year.
When the authorities open the border, I'll head to the Havre area. Two years ago there was a lot of plague that almost wiped out the big dog towns. Fortunately, there were a number of smaller towns that provided lots of fun.

How does the 20VT compare to the 204 Ruger? I'm just getting into the 20 cal craze using a 20 Tactical. I do like the less muzzle blast and recued muzzle jump vs the 223. Works great on gophers. Next up are p
dogs.
You "need" both.

The 20VT runs great out to 500 for me. Longest confirmed rat kill so far is 509 yards.
The 204 is about one third more of everything, including more powder burned for a velocity gain of about 200 fps, but it takes over at ranges past 400 yards where the 20VT is running out of poop.

To me, the 204 is also better suited to shooting the 39 SBK and the various 40 grainers. If you intend to shoot alot of the 40's, then you'll be better served with a 1/11 twist barrel.

Agree with Rick about needing both, good news is that you already have 1 in that 20 tac. Don't think that you can tell difference between that and the 204 Ruger, especially if you have an 11 tw on the 20 tac. Factory Ruger is 12 tw and mine won't shoot 39/40 grainers. Does like 35 Berger tho. My tac loves 39 sierra, and my 20 /222 loves 40 gr nos, both 11 tw. (thanks Rick ). My vt is a Rem factory 204 ruger bbl. shortened / rechambered. It shoots just about any 32 gr better than me, unless can gets loose. (don't ask ) I always thought that going north might be better for squirrel shooting, even limited to 200 rounds. Never considered coming south for pd's. Oh well. Whatever you do, have fun doing it. Tom.

I would say they are about the same out to 250-300 yds. After that, the 204 starts to fair better if there’s any wind. I shoot 32 gr Vmax in both, and the extra 400 FPS out of the 204 makes a big difference. I also use Leupold VH reticles on most of my doggin rifles, so it’s easy to move from one to another as the yardage increases with shots fired in one spot; Just a slight mental adjustment for windage and elevation holds and your hitting with different ballistic.
