Montana X-Treme

$2.99 for 4oz. I can't imagine it's not worth it, anybody ever used the stuff before? I've been pretty happy with Bore Shine lately, but I'm thinking of trying the Eliminator.

Waste of $$, or helluva deal?

Good stuff! The 50bmg copper solvent is very good too. Strong smell. I switched from butch`s and sweets to montana extreme products.....chris

It's probably as good as anything on the market, and that's a decent price. It contains some ammonia and will remove copper, but their .50BMG Copper Killer is a much stronger copper remover and removes it faster.

I use the Bore Solvent first, then go to the 50BMG if there are any stubborn copper deposits remaining.

Ok, that brings up another question... How long should I leave in what I would call "harsh" copper solvents, such as the 50BMG and Sweet's? And, once I'm done removing the copper, how do I make sure all that stuff is out of the bore?
Like I said earlier, I've been using Butch's then just dry patches and finish with light Kroil. Am I doing enough?

I've used a whole lot of Sweet's, and I still have some on hand. Sweet's says not to leave their product in the bore for over 15 minutes. I've always took them at their word, although I know shooters who've left it in for far longer with no reported problems but YMMV.

I switched to .50BMG because it seems to work faster, at least for me. I can't remenber ever leaving it in the bore for more than 10 minutes, and normally leave it in for about half that. I've never seen anything from Montana X-Treme about the subject.

You must neutralize bronze brushes and jags after using these high ammonia content products. Spraying them down with something like brake clean will do the job, as will flushing them with lacquer thinner or acetone.

I always dry patch the bore to get rid of any of the strong copper cleaner residue, then run a wet patch of lighter fluid down the tube to neutralize it. It's nothing but naptha, and works very well. Many shooters use alcohol, either denatured or isopropyl. Then dry patch again, followed by patching with a VERY light coat of a thin fine gun oil,with no trick additives) to lube the bore for the first clean bore shot. I never use grease or coat the bore with oil when putting the rifle up at the end of the season because I'm fortunate to live in a very dry climate. Those who live in humid zones have to do what they've gotta do

Hi All, One small caution, the strong vapors label is only a small indication of the strength of this stuff..Works like beaut on barrels,but...This dumb Aussie took a big wiff on the dispenser i use by mistake ..I had stupidly put 2 different components in the same sort of bottle,one was ME 50BMG and the other Penetrene..Well i took a good size smell to make sure i was filling the right bottle,i got the BMG ..I ended up lying on the floor of my shed not being able to breath in or out,it totally seized my lungs,no breath at all .. I ended up getting my breath back after pounding my chest with my fists like a gorilla or i think i'd be pushin up daisy's about now..Still suffer from chest pains months after, please use caution..JR..Jeff Rogers..ps i'm still using the stuff,because it's flat faster to remove copper than any other product i have tried

I've left Sweet's and BMG50 longer than 15 minutes by rewetting a new patch and pushing it through with the same solvent. When I am done with the heavy ammonia solvents I always push several patches of denatured alcohol or brake cleaner through the bore followed with dry patches. After that I run a saturated patch of LockEEze through the bore several times back and forth. I store the rifle muzzle down, allowing the LockEEze to dry in the bore. LockEEze contains powdered graphite which helps to lube and season the bore for that first shot from a cold clean bore. It's usually right on the money.

I use 50 BMG in my rifle barrels. I have left it in the barrel overnight with no apparent damage to the barrel. I do have a bore scope, so I'm not just guessing about bore damage.

This is just rumor, but last summer,June 2006) I was in a big sporting goods store in Miles City, MT and overheard an older gentleman say you could leave the Montana Extreme bore solvents in your bore for days without causing any damage to the bore. I haven't however, seen any "Official" information stating you can do that.

Yes their literature states that. No one has reported anything to contradict that either.

You can rest assured it will clean you sinus' from stem to stern if you get a wiff of it. Pay real close ATTENTION to the red label on the top of the bottle. Do not be curious. Take Montana Extreme's word for it.

After 153 patches and 5 brushes I'm still trying to get the copper out of my 257's bore.
Even though I hate the odor, I decided to step it up a notch and go with some Montana Extreme 50 BMG Solution. I planned on soaking the bore but needed a way to get the solvent out of the 16 oz bottle and into the tube. I found these great bottles at Midway that should work perfectly.
Went outside to fill the squeeze bottle. Holding everything at arms length, I filled the bottle about half full, and put the lids back on both. I looked down and noticed that BMG was trickling out of the nozzle on the squeeze bottle. HMM Could it be expansion from going from a cool house to a warm outdoors? Could it be evaporation from contact with the air in the bottle? Unlikely, as the only contact with air would be that which was remaining in the bottle. I picked up the original bottle, held my breath cracked open the lid and heard an audible hsss.
I left the squeeze bottle sitting in the trash can and within 3 hours it was empty.
So, imminent brethren, what the heck is going on?

Ammonia evaporates really fast!!! That is what is going on. You should have a jelly like substance after it evaporates. This substance is what protects your bore from rust when you leave it in to soak. The difference between the montana extreme stuff and sweets is that sweets is water based and montana extreme is solvent/oil based. That is why you cannot leave sweets in for days on end. The ammonia evaporating in the sweets and the corrosiveness of the water will cause rust over time. I have left sweets in a barrel for up to 1/2 an hour with no problem. I would absolutely not go more than that. BTW I use both sweets and 50bmg blend,copper killer) and for real tough copper I prefer the sweets!!!

aJR, seriously, better safe than sorry and I would see an MD, perhaps a Pulmonologist to assess if any damage was done to your lungs. Just my opinion. Good luck and thanks for the heads up.

Check out TM Solution from Sinclair. No odor at all and does a good job on copper and powder fouling. I've soaked a bore for 5 days with no ill effects.

The WipeOut Patch Out is super great also.

cuts carbon and copper, no smell, works fast and can leave in the barrel.

My borescope proves it works asap.

I always ask for the MSDS sheets so I know what really is in that bottle. I had a friend who was in the used car business, he was always cleaning engines etc. It killed him, he died a horrible death of suffocation from the chemicals he used because he damaged his lungs. I'm done with all those dangerous products. I value my health too much. Again let me advise get those MSDS sheets and read them you'll see what you are actually using.

You bring up an excellent point. My job is putting together precise instructions for repairing/maintaining equipment in an electric generating station. One of my responsibilities is putting cautions into instructions, as well as MSDS sheets and any special considerations to ensure worker safety. Some of the components, we use as shooters, are caustic as well as having respiratory concerns. Absorption through the skin and effect on internal organs is a factor that goes unnoticed, as well. The original Hoppe's #9 was found to be carcinogenic and the formula was changed.

I agree with Danny, I don't use any of the nasty smelling stuff anymore. I use Carbon Killer 2000 to soak the bore and remove carbon and then follow with Bore Tech Eliminator, they both work great and are non-toxic. In fact I have never seen copper come out of the bore like I have with Eliminator.
