Montana X-Treme cleaning rods

Well...I guess I had to find out the hard way. Purchased two Montana Xtreme coated rods (.17 & 22 x 42"). The .17 was fine but the .22 had a slight bend in the front end of rod ( in the front 6-8" ) . Called Montana and they informed me that it was not abnormal for the larger caliber (.22 & up ) to not be absolutely straight. With this rod when pulling rod back through the muzzle there would be contact ( audible click every time). I am using a Lucas bore guide with the correct sized rod insert as well. The next thing they told me was that I could not get a replacement for a month or more and recommended me to contact the company I purchased from and " see what they would do".Right from the beginning Montana's rep seemed to want to side step taking care of there product. Just letting people know.Good luck.

Not sure why anyone would not be satisfied with Dewey's coated rods for centerfire rifles. Been using them for years with no issues.

I've never experienced what some critics claim about them, material becoming embedded in the rod. Mine are twenty years old and show very little signs of wear.

I see people using the Dewey's, curious as to why I don't see more carbon fibre rods in use. What am I missing?

I am sure others have had good luck with carbon fiber, But I got 1 when they had a lifetime guarantee, the tip came off, replaced, the handle fell apart, replaced, cleaning with brass brush, shattered, would not replaced as they had changed their guarantee, no longer lifetime, 1 year only. Use Dewey and Pro Shot, have had no problems.

I have a carbon fiber rod in .17 caliber and the issue is a lot of flex and length is too short (36") because the handle comes in contact with the high comb on my rifle stock (Cooper 54).I wanted a .17 rod ( 42" or longer ) with smaller diameter handle for that reason but Dewey does not make a .17 rod any longer than 36" . Anyway the bent .22 caliber Montana rod is going back for refund and will buy a new Dewey but keeping the .17 hoping nothing goes wrong with it because there customer care is a joke. Thanks all.

Within a reasonable price, there are only 2 choices IMO:
Coated, Dewey....
Stainless, ProShot

I prefer the ProShot, but Ihave a pair of Deweys that are 15 years old and have been used A LOT! They look like new.

When I first became a serious long range varmint hunter I consulted the benchrest guys of a variety of topics. They were all using Dewey coated rods. I know, it's a "herd animal" type reaction but I figured these guys know what they're doing. Dewey has been around a long time and has a proven record of quality.

Perhaps the carbon fiber rods are just as good, I really don't know since I've never used them because I've never had a reason to switch. I know I hate the idea of putting a bare aluminum or stainless rod down my custom barrels.

I recently bought a couple of these http://10xshootingsupplies.com/accessories_cleaningrods.html and they are pretty good rods. I needed a 48" rod and got to looking around. I bought the first one, 243/270, for a 6mm barrel but the rod felt a little tight in the bore so I bought another in 22 cal. I still have a use for the larger one. If you need a special long one, Bill will make you any length you need for the same price.

Called Dewey today and they will make a 42" .17 caliber rod as they are making a run at this time. Kind of spendy but went ahead with it. Asked them about it being normal for a rod to have a bend in it like the Montana I had purchased and there comment was............. no!
