Montana Rifleman Actions / Barrels

Good Evening,

For the past month or so, I've been in planning stages of building a 6mmBR Rem. for a walking varminter/hunting rifle. It will have a 22" - 24" barrel, med. sporter contour, read: something to fit my 700 BDL wood stock), etc.. I have looked at various options including rebarreling my Rem. 700 BLD .280 all the way up to having one of those high-tech barrels built by On Target Technologies for my T/C Encore, like the gun of the month Encore that is now on the 6mmBR.com website that shoots in the .2's!!). Obviously, I've also considered building a ground-up rifle as well.

While web browsing today, I ran across Montana Rifleman's website. While I have heard of them, I know absolutely nothing about them. My questions are - has anyone on the forum used their actions and/or barrels? How's the quality? Would you recommend one of their barreled actions for building a gun, etc.??

Thanks,

Run...run far and run fast!

If you are CONSIDERING one, than just go with a rem or savage

Finish is worse than any rem, and they still need trued.

Might also look at Lawton Actions and barrels...

Also, Jerry Stiller will have a stainless Remington clone out soon that wont need truing, and will run about 600$ www.viperactions.com

JB,
Thanks for the heads-up... My ole' knees won't take much running, but I'll certainly turn around and start hobbling along in the other direct.

With regards to Jerry Stiller's actions, I have heard good things about them so I be sure to take a closer look.

Thanks,

ernie - You may want to take a look at SURGEON actions. I have a target one and it is super. The only thing you may not like is they have a rail built into the action. http://surgeonrifles.com/ it does't cost anything to look.

Indeed -- they are impressive, and not badly priced. No stainless thugh if that matters, and integral pic rail only.

Hobbling is good :D

Well, I can't comment on the action quality. They seem a bit pricey for an unkown investment casted action. Another 500 and you have a top of the line custom with no doubts. The barrel work I've had them do is ok. I've had 2 guns rebarreled by them. Both are varmint hunting rigs. One is a 220swift, the other a 243win. They both shoot in the 1/2 moa range, so no complaints here. I use them for ground squirrel removal, and they do just fine, and much better than the original barrels.

I have a Montana Rifleman short action, magnum boltface thats been built into a 300WSM big game hunting rifle. I am in the process of getting the barreled action MILSPEC coated black, then I will put it into a Boyds laminated stock. I decided on the Montana because with a mag box of 3.1 inches I can seat the 180 & 200gr .308 projectiles out further than any other action on the market. Controlled feed is another bonus with this action. The actions are as previously mentioned investment cast - nothing wrong with that, my Ruger MkII Ultralight .308 shoots bloody well.

Montana's do need a bit of finishing. Mine had tool marks in the bolt raceway which I cleaned up. I didn't get the action trued, my gunsmith checked it and it was fine for use as a big game rifle.

But to build a Montana into the sort of rig you are contemplating: I wouldn't personally, If I was going that route, I'd choose a Remington 700 Action and get it trued. Thats what I am contemplating at the moment as my 6x284 is just about at its end, and I'm thinking of using my trued Rem 700 action as the basis for a 6mmbr. However, I am also considering getting a 6mmBR built on a Stiller Viper.

Michael

O wouldn't bother with the Montana action. It's a controlled feed, similar to Mauser - which will give you grief loading 6BR through the magazine - let alone single feeding. Just get a Remington clone or something simple. Even a Savage , if you like ugly but serviceable rifles.
