Previously, for their modest price, a guy could afford to do a bit of work on 'um to bring 'um "up to snuff. And, it seemed to depend on the 'vintage' of their manufacture. Early ones needed quit a bit, later were better, never did get ahold of any of their last made.

everybody uses 416 for one reason, ease of machinability and minimum tool wear.
When you see an ad that says……”Machined from heat treated 416 Bars”, that’s Pretty low on the Totem pole.

RemArms makes actions of CM, so does Winchester and Savage. It ain't impossible. These new MRC actions aren't BR, not being CRF. Heck! Cut rifle barrel makers make some barrels of CM...

Rifle actions can be and are made out of ...
Aluminum! ...Or Brass! Millions and millions of them contain the pressures they were designed for....depends on how the firearm and actions are designed and for what pressures...like barrel lock-up with the bolt, AR style, or aluminum action with hardened steel inserts. I have CM, stainless, and aluminum in rifle actions, they all work, by design.
I don't own anything from Montana Rifle Company and heard mixed reviews on customer service and varying quality of their products...seems to happen alot these days. Excellently engineering designed, top quality materials, and excellent machining, inspection, quality control, top customer service, produce a quality product,.. every time, with employees & management who care about the products as a reflection of themselves..Simple, to make the best, be the best.

Chrome Moly is superior to 416, 17-4 at the proper heat treat, such as what Bat uses, is superior to both.
Bat will make a Chrome Moly action on special order.

Not sure theres enough room between the screws for the 4” box and you should go 1.25-18 for your new action. Sounds like a hint to bat is in order next time you have their ear.
I really prefer 16 TPI.
Wouldn't there be enough room if they stretch out the screws to a Rem footprint? A current M-70 long can go 3.825 inside with Wyatt's box. I just want a little more.........

I've never seen a need for CRF except as insurance on dangerous game. Shot placement is more important.
I dont want to sound like I dont have any rifles that wont shoot decent. Ive got a montana 6.5 c that shoots good. Its that classic. Looks kinda like an old model 70. Likes 142 sierras and H4350. Im glad their back in business. They used to have some fruit cake answering the phone. I hope they got that fixed. Doug

Push feed, al la Remington700, is fine generally. The CRF of a model 70 pre64 is just added insurance against a mis fed round imo. I like CRF but certainly I'm not dogmatic about having it.
I have had every failure, except the bolt handle coming off, with Rem 700s. That is failure to feed, failure to extract, failure to eject, galling, AD, etc.
I have had zero failures with my CRF M-70s. That pretty much settles it for me concerning hunting rifles......
