moly? naked?

started using moly coated bullets last week out of my 22-250. so far i love them. 4300 fps 40gr vmax - no pressure no copper and very little with the cleaning rod. also one holes at 100 and will shoot 5/8 at 200 in heavy wind if i watch the flags. factory model 70 heavy barrel. anyone here have any good or bad to say about the stuff i would love to hear from you?.

There are several threads about moly buried in the archives. You could look through them and get a wealth of information.

Moly oxidizes at temperatures found in the barrel. The temps don't last long so the oxidation products aren't that extensive but there are some. In the presence of moisture it can produce sulfuric acids. Obviously we need to clean it out right after shooting. A single patch with bore solvent on it until you get home should suffice.

If you coat your own try tungsten disulphide or boron nitride instead. Tungsten is black like moly, sticks better, has a lower coefficient of friction and oxidizes at higher temperatures. Boron Nitride is white, goes on clear, handles very high temperature, and moisture better than moly or tungsten. It has a slightly higher coef. of friction than tungsten though.

The moly-fusion is a grease or oil. It is not impacted plated onto the bullet. Having said that, the instant the powder ignites, the grease/oil is gone. Kinda like some of the products sold that claim to restore life in a worn out engine.

Fordwrench, yes I use them. But only because I have been able to buy moly-coated bullets at discounted prices.

I always oil the barrels of the rifles I have been using moly coated bullets in, after they were fired to inhibit corrosion.

All things being equal I prefer naked bullets, but I like a bargain also.

Have been toying with the idea of using a piece of never dull on a cleaning rod to remove the moly from the barrel after shooting them.

Stay tuned.
