Moly fails to bond to bullet.

I have a small note to add to this thread. While coating several batches of 6mm bullets, I found that a coarser tumbling media used before impact coating will leave a dull finish and give a much deeper moly coating in less time. I stumbled upon this while removing moly from contaminated bullets. I have found the highly polished bullets to take much longer to coat.

I have found that lead tipped bullets can contaminate the media and bowl.

This is not something a guy wants to find out right before hunting season.

So I now have extra media and an extra vibrating bowl on hand, and I do not use lead tipped bullets.

I have also switched from Lyman ceramic media to Copperhead Copper plated steel BBs for media.
I magnetically separate the media from bullets. I have a jet engine permanent magnet stator in a plastic just with a rope tied to the magnet. There is another rope, duct taped to the outside of the jug as a barrier, so when I pull on the magnet rope, the BBs can't follow the magnet up the side of the jug.

I no longer wash bullets before moly coating them. At one time bullets may have been oily, but all the Nosler, Hornady, and Berger bullets I get now are squeaky clean.

ive never coated lead tipped bullets (just because i dont use them). lyman's directions mention that the lead will contaminate the Moly and will render it useless in little time.

I was successful in moly coating bullets (sierra, nosler and hornady) for two years before i had my problem. Hornady responded to me and said that occasionally the detergent may not get the bullets clean enough for a moly coat to stick. Probably because the detergent that was used on that batch may have be old and needed to be replaced.....so, im going to be soaking all my new bullets in alcohol before coating just so i dont have to worry about getting bunch of crappy coated bullets.
