Molly removal

After trying Kroil (didn't work) Barnes Copper Solvent (too expensive) I found plain ammonia to work the best. Just covered the bullets (87 Vmax ) in a plastic bowl and stirred them around a couple of minutes and no more Moly.

My same experience about 10 years ago, also with about 300 rounds fired. JB with a bronze brush got most of it out, but a small amount remained. Did not seem to matter, rifle went back to shooting it's usual very small groups.

For taking it off coated bullets, I soaked in GM top engine cleaner for about 10 minutes then tumbled in an old bath towel.

Pity as I've used it for years in my Krieger barrelled 22BR and 30-06 without any trouble. However, I clean the rifles after each firing as if they'd shot straight copper jacketed.

I did clean some off a batch (can't remember why!!!) very easily using brake cleaner spray and a few kitchen (paper) towels.

On a side note, be careful with carburettor cleaner and the new WD40 cleaner as they're horrid on both plastic and stock finishes! Guess how I know...brake cleaner's good and if you shoot a 303 British Lee Enfield it keeps the chamber nice and dry: helps keep the first few shots in the main group.

Bore Tech makes a specific product to remove Moly. It does it on the first try. Moly Remover. Their C4 carbon remover also removes Moly.

Wild child, what does it do to your barrel and accuracy? Be specific and how were they coated?

Guess it's how you describe a "mess". I had none when getting it out of the barrel using JB. Same results as when I remove carbon fouling. Soaking the bullets in GM Top Engine Cleaner then tumbling in a towel (done outside), also was not a "mess".

All done with little effort. ;D

well after further testing today without pulling all my hair out, I discovered while fire-forming brass from a rifle that sets in the cold outside that when the barrel is cold it shot guns bullets until i have about 5-6 rounds down it then the bullets begin settling into a nice little group. When doing 5 shot groups I was starting with a cold barrel and things were bad. upon striping the barrel and using naked bullets my problem was solved. So no molly in this barrel or for me in the winter. I coated em in the brass shaker in a empty 1 lb powder container then dump em into a towl and roll em around to take of excess molly.

What they suggest you do is tumble in clean corncob media for 15 minutes or so,and they should look like a silver mirror. You realize with moly you need to increase your charge slightly because of the loss of friction. This may be the reason you are getting varied results from a cold bore shot.

Just to add my $0.02 worth....

I have not tried this on any firearm, parts, bullets.... BUT, back in the day on the 702 boat, we would use bug juice to remove moly from anything metal, usually found in the torpedo room. Bug juice was the 'kool aid' served on the mess decks.

2 packs of powder mix to a gallon of water. Removed ALL forms of grease and left the metal pretty bright.

The juice packs found in MREs have the same effect.....

I tumble them with corn cob media like the others have said.

Important: After thoroughly cleaning your barrel from moly and before putting it away for a long period, be sure to lubricate the bore. If not, you may find rust in the barrel next time out.
