Seems to me that tight groups & top scores have been accomplished before and after the sugar coating fads.
This is certainly true, when I was shooting short range group & score back in the eighties molly coating bullets became very popular. Most shooters were coating bullets, I never did and never felt handicapped in any way. I did however talk to loads of guys and kind of got a feel for what was good and bad about the process. Now that I am shooting 1000Yd. Benchrest, I can tell you that there are times when coated bullets can be an advantage. Not from an accuracy standpoint but from a cleaning and consistency standpoint over long strings of fire being shot very fast. I'm not trying to sell the process, just pointing out what to expect from it as the OP asked.
