Mohawk Action

I have a shot-out Rem 600 Mohawk in 222 and would like to know if the action; married to a matching STEEL floorplate and trigger guard, would make for a fairly accurate hunting rifle if re-barreled in 6mBR and stocked sympathetically? I can live with the dogleg bolt and need to use a bridge mount.

Thanks

Klench

Hi Klench:

A few years back lots of good benchrest rifles were made using Remington 600 actions. They are short and light. Yours would require that the bolt face be opened up to accept the larger case size of the 6 BR. Not sure what your budget or your aspirations are with this gun, though you did say "hunting" rifle, but $150 or so of custom work to the action to true it up and make sure everything is square and modify or replace the bolt would give you a great little platform for a lightweight and very accurate varmint/deer rifle.

Good luck.

yep- just the right size for a carry rifle.

Been looking for one myself for a few years now to do exactly what your asking.

Thanks for this and awful glad I asked as silly old me had clean forgotten the size of a 222 case head!

Over here,England) it costs about £150 for a gunsmith to pick up the phone so this may not be quite such a viable project as I first thought! Guess I could consider building something like a screaming 17 though. Any other calibre suggestions that don't involve bolt face work?

Cheers

Didn't realize you were "across the pond", Klench.

You have a very broad field of calibers based on the .222/.223 bolt size: from .221 Fireball, another .222 Rem., .223 Rem., .223 Ackley Improved, .222 Rem. Mag., the new .204 Ruger, the original 6x47 which is the .222 Rem. Mag. necked up to 6mm and there's the TCU line of 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm based on the .223 case. Not to mention the .17 caliber field which includes the 17 Rem. and a bunch of wildcats. Or the .20 Tactical, .20 Practical, 20 VarTarg ... you certainly have a wide range of caliber choices. In this new age of "switch-barrel" rifles you can even have several barrels made up in different calibers and change them in a matter of minutes.

Pick your "poison" and have some fun!
