Modifying Hornady Custom Grade Sizing Die

Press: RCBS RockChucker

Die: Hornady Custom Grade Sizer die

I can't get it to bump the shoulder. Got the press ram at full upright position. Got the die threaded all the way in. so the press ram touches the end of the die (shellholder in the end of the ram)

The die shoulder doesn't touch the case shoulder, so I can't bump the shoulder back.

If I mill say 0.020" at a time off the end of the die, will that get to to be able to bump the shoulder? Am I missing something here? Or should I just get a quality bushing die that will bump the shoulder? What die you recommend? For 6mm ARC (not everyone makes every die for this caliber yet)

I have run into this problem several times. You can remove material from the shell holder or remove material from the die body. Most will try the shell holder first as it is the cheapest part. I have done dies on several occasions and it worked - but is irreversible. On most dies you have room to remove material because the bottom side is either beveled or has a radius on them. Most dies are harder than hades.

What brand of shellholder are you using? Each brand has a slightly different depth to the case bottom. Can you use a Hornady shellholder on your RCBS?

Best/ easiest way is to have shell holder faced off. I am having a couple each of 308 and 223 done right now, then he is going to cerakote them so they won't rust.

Keep screwing the die down a little at a time to get some camover in your press. It will get there!
^^^This^^^ and if it still won't bump the shoulder then, yes, material can be taken off of the die or the shell holder. I prefer to take it from the die so I don't have to keep a dedicated holder for that die, on general hunting stuff. If you want to keep this as consistent as possible, a dedicated holder isn't a bad thing, as some are a tad thicker than others. I wouldn't take .020 at a time off. Rather, I'd start with no more than about .010.

^^^^^^ This.
It looks to me you can screw your die down a little bit more but maybe I don’t see something idk

Doesn't one of the companies that makes dies make shell holders that are under sized?
Redding does but for some reason there plus size not negative so they just make the problem worse . I guess they make them for people to lazy or not knowledgeable enough to set up there sizing die for proper shoulder bump. It’s too bad they don’t start out under go to zero then up in size

So do you have a Hornady 6mm arc full length sizer, or the neck sizer? 46262 is the fl part number. I would try the correct Hornady shell holder before any machine work. Will the sized brass chamber? Adjust the sizing die without the spindle.

If you run a case all the way into your sizing die and leave it up, you will most likly see a gap between the shell holder and the bottom of the die. This is due to the clearances in the handle linkage. This is why you can't just run handle up and screw a die down til it hits die.Turn the die down a little bit at a time til it bumps die while sizing a case.

Most shell holders have some play in them. You can put a 5 to 10 thousand chim in to the shell holder that will lift up your case that much and will bump shoulder. Small chim between case head and shell holder.Do this before cutting down top of shell Holder.

Insufficient case lube will exacerbate press stretch which can cause your problem. The press will flex a bit causing a gap when you actually size a case.

Take a look at your die/shellholder junction with a piece of brass being sized at full insertion. You may have a sizeable gap between the two when sizing. Better lube practice or screwing the die down to counter the flex of the press should help.

if you think you need a couple thousands more bump buy every brand of shell holder you can find. they are all made to different tolerances and will give different bump on the case.

Relatedly....I've been told bump bolt gun shoulders 1 - 2 thou. And semi guns (this is a semi gun) 2-3 thou, due to looser tolerances needed for semi auto function. Dunno if true, but that's what I'm told.

The Redding Competition Shell Holders work pretty good. You can set some cam over on the press with the .010 one, then switch to the lower number ones till you find the one that gives you the bump you want.
