Modify sleeved 700 action for barrel nut?

i have a sleeved Rem 700 action that shoots great. The sleeve extends past the action face so using a barrel nut won’t work. So when it comes time to put on a new barrel it’ll have to go to a gunsmith.

What would be the downside to turning down the sleeve so it’s flush with the action face so I could use a barrel nut arrangement going forward? Then I can change barrels whenever I want instead of shipping it to a gunsmith

How far does it go past the receiver face? I would think you would need to cut off quite a bit to get down to the action face.

Personally, I would sell it or get another action to do a barrel nut with.

Or just stay away from nuts. I like the traditional joint. How often do you rebarrel?

The inside of the sleeve will have to be roughly 1 3/8 " dia. The nut could then be up to about 1 5/16' (1.3125) If the nut was made with four notches on the front face and a wrench made which would slide over the barrel and reach down to the nut, it would work fine.
I'm assuming you want to use pre-fits rather than have a barrel fitted. That would be the only reason to use a nut. Otherwise, for swapping barrels, a conventionally fitted barrel works better. Headspace is set and the barrel can be removed and replaced without the need for a gauge. WH

Ok. I hate to contribute to the Nuttification of a Remington, but if you don't want to make a custom nut with a nose to extend under the sleeve, then have a bushing made that is 1.350 od by 1.062 id x just longer than the recess. Needs to be parallel to .0001. --Jerry

Why wouldnt you be able to use a nut
The nut could always be longer and it shouldnt be any larger diameter then the action.
Sorry I forget most use the nut because they dont have a lathe or dont/cant do the work themself
Personally if you do the barrel nut you still want a barrel vise and it is always good to have the headspace gauges
To do it with a shouldered barrel you need a good action wrench and a nice internal wrench is good to have latter once the barrel is busted loose of the action.

Someone gimme a clue...
Boring raceway, sleeving bolt...been there done that a couple of times.

Sleeving a receiver? Huh?

So you have some pics you can share?

Here's a pic of a similar sleeve (The exact sleeve looks similar to a long Stolle action). Anyway you can see the sleeve extends much farther than the action face so the standard barrel nut would be under the sleeve, so there's no way the wrench would fit on the barrel nut.

Not the hottest setup but I like the rifle and want to keep it. The action is bedded in an Ian Robertson H&H stock and the rifle shoots extremely well. Current caliber is 6AI so barrel life is short.

You could make a barrel nut thats 30” long if thats what it took. Its not too far. Your barrel could still be threaded the regular length and just make the nut long enough to come out from under the sleeve and get a wrench on it.

If I had the expertise to make a custom nut I'd probably just turn my own barrels and leave the sleeve as is. My goal here is to use off the shelve parts I can buy.

I figured you knew it was going to have to be made and then youll be able to change barrels in the future.

I plead ignorance.
Aluminum is 1/3 the stiffness of steel. In fact, one of the most flexible metals- which is why it's used in aerospace applications.

What are you gaining, by sleeving a steel action, with aluminum?

I get that weight may be a consideration in some applications, but if you're gonna sleeve it with the goal of making it stiffer- why not use more steel??

Besides, I'm not convinced that anything that happens behind the recoil lugs is of much consequence at the target anyway...but that's a whole 'nother topic...

Its not for stiffness its for a larger bedding footprint
