Model 70 trigger

Hey Guys, I just bought a model 70 heavy varmit off a member here... the trigger isn’t horrible it’s about 3.7 lbs on my Lyman trigger scale but that’s more than I want...

What’s a good replacement trigger? Timney any good?

If it is a post-64 action with the old style trigger you have a great trigger. I have three match rifles built on that action and once the contact points are stoned and a Target trigger return spring is installed you can adjust down to .5Ib. if you want to. I don't, keep mine at around 1.5Ibs. for sling shooting. I have had a Timney and it was pretty good but in the end went back to the original. If you would like to try a Timney I can make you a good deal on one.

I’m not sure about the older style trigger, I’d say it is the older style. From what I can read these rifles were made in the 90s

The target trigger springs can be bought from erniethegunsmith.com. You can replace the trigger with a Jewell, too, if you want it in the ounces for pull weight.

As watercam said an Ernie the Gunsmith spring and some stoning the sear will get you a great trigger.

I just bought a model 70 heavy varmint also. I installed the target spring from ernie the gunsmith also. Polished the trigger/sear surface and adjusted the over travel. Made a nice trigger out of it for 10 bucks.

I have an older 1970's Model 70 Sporter in 222 Rem that I went with target springs from Ernie and it is a great trigger. I need to have a shorter length stock so instead of cutting the original wood order a synthetic takeoff from a different long action and dropped it in. Nice coyote rig for called coyotes.
