Model 70 pre 64 stock

I have a couple of pre 64 Winchesters. One a 270 and one an 06.

Looking for a thumb hole stock for the 06, I can't seem to find one.

The 270 ... it originally came with a round medallion on the top of the butt stock. I'm looking for that medallion as well.

Appreciate any help

Sorry I cannot help you but would like to ask about the medallion. I cannot picture a medallion on any pre 64 M70's I have seen. Where was it located?

Do you mean that is a pre'64 stock or that it fits a pre'64 M70? That does not look like a factory finished stock and I haven't ever seen a black recoil pad on a pre'64. I have a couple books at home I can check though, Winchester did some odd stuff.

That is the stock that was on it when I got it. Could have been refinished.

As I said, I did see a pic of a medallion there on a winchester stock previously.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

In all my years of collecting Pre-64s I’ve never seen a stock like that. So my guess is that it was a replacement stock. It wasn’t uncommon in the 50s for restockers to put in a small escutcheon in these kind of places for the owner to get his initials engraved in them. Rather than a round ‘medallion’ shape it could have been anything. The next owner would have removed the small engraved escutcheon and put in a plug.

So this stock very likely wasn’t factory.

Typical look of a late 1940s early 1950s pre-64 model 70 stock. I do believe most if not all that had recoil pads from the factory were reddish in color. This one is circa 1949592765D4-2716-4DFC-9294-AF42C72DC128.jpeg

Pre war mod. 70s had a steel buttplate. Post war had black plastic. Some models had red pads with winchester on the back. I dont think thats a factory pad. Lop was 15 .5 if that helps. Doug

I just saw a nice custom Winchester model 70 Thumbhole stock from a 270 in Mike Goodmans shop in Pa. Contact GOODMAN ARMS. good luck. it was temping me to build a hot rod 284 Winchester on that beauty. Mike in Ct

Winchester put steel butt plates on some after the war too. I looked at my vintage 1953 257 roberts and its got a steel butt plate. Ive learned messin with pre 64s you cant say they never did that, somebody will show you one. Doug
