miss fire problem

i have a rem 700 with jewel trigger and cal speedlock. this is a new build and at least 1 out of 5 shots does not fire. firing pin seams to be hitting primer but it doesnt go off. it does it with factory ammo and reloads. help needed thanks.

While I'm not familiar with a "cal speedlock", first thing I would do is remove it and re-install the original factory parts. Problem goes away, problem is the "cal speedlock".

This is a strange one. I originally suspected primers not fully seated 'til I read the "factory" ammo mis-fires. With my limited knowledge I'd start measuring the length and diameter of the replacement firing pin. Shorter than the factory? Larger diameter and being limited in its' forward travel by the firing pin hole in the bolt face? Any chance of dirt inside the bolt body? If these areas all come up "zero" I'd look for professional help, from the builder. Hopefully a pro can provide better advice. I'll watch the thread: got my curiosity level up now. ???

Did the misfires happen with the factory trigger and bolt assembly? When things like this happen, I start back from "scratch" and then work forward.

And since this is a new build have the headspace rechecked. Sounds like too much headspace. If you have a case mic check a fired case against an unfired case and see what the difference is between the shoulder dimensions.

never fired the gun before the build. bought the gun new and dropped of to have barrel installed. it is a 22-250 ackley so just fire forming brass now. has any one heard of the trigger causing this. thanks for the input. the gun smith hasnt been any help wont give any suggestions without the gun in his hands and havnt had time to take it to him

1shot, take the advise given to you by clowdis. Now that you've told us that your dealing with a AI chamber I agree it's most likely a head space issue. AI chamberings should be set up so that factory loads are a light crush fit in your chamber. Otherwise excessive head spacing will allows the firing pin to drive the cartridge forward in your chamber resulting in primer stricks that produce misfires. Sounds like you need to find a different smith!!!

That did it! The word "Ackley" set off that light bulb above my head. RJ in texas is right-on. A friend had a 223 Ackley and had the identical problem when fireforming his brass.

Had the same problem..It's headspace. Seat the bullets to the lands when fireforming. Everyone will shoot then. To long of headspace is letting the cartridge travel. Guarantee that is your problem..

Reloading with seating the bullet out to the lands would fix the problem if all you do is reload, but to properly set the chamber right, it needs to be set back a few thousands to as RJ stated to get a crush on factory ammo for safe & proper headspace.
