Misprint load Data...Maybe?

I've been loading up some .45 ACP 230gr RN with Blue Dot @ 8.6gr 1.265" for my XDm and thought I'd load up some lighter 185gr RN with Blue Dot for my XDs but when looking in the Speer data book, it says to load it @ 10.7gr to 11.7gr at 1.212".

WHAT! 2 more grains than the 230 bullet?

Yes the 185gr bullet is shorter but at those suggested OAL's both bullets are going into the case about the same so why such a difference? Is it a misprint? I would think it would be less powder at least 1gr less or am I missing something here?

I looked in my other data books and there is no data using Blue Dot powder.

Thumb

I have the Speer #9, #11,#12,#13 and #14 reloading manuals and Blue Dot is not listed in any of these Speer manuals for the .45 ACP.

I would like to help but I'm thinking you might have two dyslexic typing fingers like I do and your post may be a typo. :o

If your manual dates to when Eisenhower was still in office then my condolences for being older than dirt. :D

Looking at my Lyman Pistol & Revolver Reloading Handbook second edition (1999) for 45 ACP they suggest 7.5 - 10.2 grains Blue Dot @ 1.275" for 230 gn jacketed round-nose.

Blue Dot conspicuously absent from their 185 gn jacketed hp loads while their 185 gn jacketed wadcutter data @ 1.135" says 7.3 - 10.2 grains Blue Dot.

Alliant's only suggested (maximum!) 45 ACP load is for a 200 gn Speer Gold Dot HP @ 1.2" with 10.5 grains of Blue Dot.

A 185 is gonna have less bearing surface (thus less metal to get swaged) than a similarly-profiled 230 grain bullet so maybe a stouter load would be indicated BUT... by 2 grains? That seems a bit much IMHO.

I'd maybe try 1/2 grain at first, see how it shoots. Easy enough to load 5 each at + 1/2 grain increments, stop shooting once you see how your XDm reacts.

It's not my fingers, it's my brain that's dyslexic. It was the Sierra book, not Speer. :o

The 185gr data is actually for a JHP bullet but the JRN is the same size in length so I went with that one. I will start lower and work up.

Just so you know, here's a pic of the data showing that it does say 10.7 - 11.7

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I assume no liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information. 45 acp Blue Dot

In the 45 acp-Blue Dot- 11.0 gr-200gr LSWC (my hard cast bullet*) -WLP maximum hot load. Ok in S&W 645. Loading data not found else where. Start low, work up.

Just got back from the range today and tested out 4 different loads. All loads used Blue Dot powder, OAL was 1.240, and bullets were jacketed RMR 185gr HBRN on all loads. Here are the powder loads I tested.

9.1gr = Good
9.3gr = Good
9.5gr = Good
9.7gr = Good

They all shot great and I couldn't feel the difference at all except the lower powered loads ejected the cases to the rear and the higher powered loads shot them to the side. At 10 yards I was able to keep a 2" group with all 20 rounds so I'm going with the 9.3gr loads.
