Mirage shield

That period was a great time for BR. Unfortunately a lot of the oldtimers that made it fun have passed. I was introduced to BR around 1975 when Bruno, O'Cock and Rubright used the same range for practice .....only i was interested in developing varmint loads for 700 Varmint specials because back then the area was still rural with lots of places to shoot. If only I jumped in with both feet back in the day, I would have had the chance to shoot with more of the legends that made the sport so great.
The only Legends of the sport that I shoot with are the Euber Bros. I wish I got the chance to meet 2 people, Myles Hollister & Vince Pastorella but that's never going to happen.

Ryobi One plus dual power Portable fan Part #P3320. You have to buy the battery & charger separately. It can run on electricity or battery. Those guy's can stick with that old school crap. Like I said I have 4 new carbon fiber shields and about 5 of the regular alum shields in a pile collecting dust. Nice thing is in a 10 minute match, I'm usually done before 5 minutes and if it's hot I can turn it on myself and keep cool. You other guy's can take your mirage shields off and try to fan yourself with it, plus I know that I am not going to hold up the line putting my fan down vs having that crude thing on my barrel. If you feel that your mirage shield works for you, more power to ya. You have your opinion and I have mine.

Thanks Jim, I`ll check it out.

Phil.

BPCR shooters have been using "blow tubes" for years. (drill out a cartridge case to accept a piece of flexible tubing. Blow. Works best for people that are not full of hot air!). A similar arrangement can be used with a fan, funnel and duct tape.

I like Sakos setup that they use on their trg models. There is a small post on the break and one on the front of the picatinny that their elastic mirage shield clips to on each side.

The Ryobi fan really does work. An added feature is that your barrel never really gets hot. If you spend a little extra on a large battery, it will run for about 18 hours continuously.

One thing I've learned, is that you can't buy excellence but you can't attain excellence without spending money.

Are you guys using fans during registered matches? I wasn’t aware that fans were legal for registered matches? I’d been told that at registered matches they were a no go whether high power or benchrest. No doubt a nice Dewalt work fan is better than a band if allowed but I can’t find a ruling either way and they can’t possibly fall under “electronic communication device” so I’ve never been able to figure out a clear a defined ruling on it.

F class is different I think but I've never seen it addressed in br...and if it's not addressed in the rules, then it's legal.

Frankly, I can't imagine why a fan wouldn't be legal in any class or sanctioning body's matches.

I did read somewhere that a curved Mirage shield is better than a flat shield in terms of how the Mirage moves in relation to the shield. The flat shield tends to have the heat waves en circle it where the curved shield pushes the waves away from it and the line of scope sight.

I come here quite often, even if I don't log in. I mostly don't log in as I have nothing relevant to add to most topics, a lot of the stuff being talked about going way over my head. But little by little I'm learning.
I'm posting here today because I live in the tropics (Puerto Rico) and shooting in 90 degree days is very common. On still days with no breeze, it is difficult to keep sweat off my eyes and glasses, plus it is also very tiring. Enter Ryobi. The 18 volt hybrid will run on 110 volts or 18 volts. With the battery it will run all day, and it is very quiet. Since I already had the batteries and such for other power tools, the addition of the fan was just the cost of the fan. I've never tried to make it cool the barrel. I have it blowing air in my face. I think it a worthwhile investment. Haven't been to any kind of match with it yet, so I don't know if anybody will object. I could always put it on the floor and aim it up at my face.

Regards,
Luisyamaha

Crazy! I started a thread a little over a year ago regarding wanting to use my Tikka T3 light for F-Class. The general consensus was that the barrel is too light, and I would have issues with barrel heat and mirage. When I brought up the suggestion of a fan to keep the barrel cool, the responses indicated it was the equivalent of cheating and would not be allowed in competition. Has that changed?
