Minimum velocity for jacketed bullet in .22 Hornet?

Looking to load up some reduced loads for a 22 Hornet want to use some Sierra 40gr round nose for targets and squirrels. Full power Hornet loads is WAY too much. So how low can I go with jacketed bullets or should I just load with cast?

No offense but that doesn’t really make sense to me.
If you want to reduce loads for a 22 hornet then you might as well just shoot a 22 LR or 22 WMR.

A quick guess would be to use less Unique? "Unique From 5.7 grains to 7.0 grains for 40 gr bullet. " From Steve's Pages.

I've down loaded a bunch of 22K Hornet rounds. Until recently I didn't have a chronograph so I don't have velocity numbers. I've never had a bullet stuck in the barrel but I've never tried anything lower than half of a published load. I always use Puff-Lon to fill the case because in the beginning when I didn't I had some erratic over pressure situations from flash detonation.

As far as Ledd Slinger's question: Why not use 22LR or 22 WMR; I can shoot 1/4MOA with hand loads out to 100 yards, I don't have shortages, fliers, lot #s to chase, and I find it fun to do.

I've gone as low as 10 grains of IMR-4227 with a Sierra 45SP. Very accurate, but slow - and the wind will really mess with you. 11 of 4227 with a Hornady 45SP was also very accurate in my CZ 527 American in 22hornet. I have some of the Sierra 40SP's still, but the load I finalized on was 13.2 of LilGun with a 40 Sierra FBHP lit by a CCI 500 pistol primer. That's a very hard bullet, is extremely accurate, and is the least effected by wind of any bullet I ever tried. (34 Midway dogtown HP bullets, 35 v-max's, 40 v-max's, 40SP, 2 45SP's, etc. The 40 vmax's might be a little better at distance, but you'll really blow things up with those.)

I used either CCI 500's or Rem 6 1/2's, and most recently been loading the small pistol primers exclusively now for my hornet. That seems to be where the magic is, in mine anyway. Good luck to you.

A few years ago I decided to take my 10" .22 Hornet TC with me prairie dog shooting for drive by shots and close shots off the bench. Since I had a 6.5-20 rifle scope on it I wanted a mild recoil load that also wasn't too loud. Best load was 40gr Sierra Hornet bullet ahead of 5.5gr of Universal Clays for 2060 fps and 5/8" groups at 50 yards. If I remember right that thin jacketed blunt nosed bullet opened up young prairie dogs just fine.
