minimum seating depth?

I have a 22-250 with a 1-16 twist that i need to use a 40 gr bullet. Problem is when i seat into the neck I'm only grasping about .112" of bullet. I could seat deeper, but I'm trying to seat into the lands about .010. Did anyone run into this problem?
Thanks, Greg

Yes I have run into that problem, and I go by "one caliber as a minimum" in the case, so for your 22-250 that would be .224 in the case, and it I cant touch the lands, and feel I need to, then Ill shoot a longer heaver bullet, otherwise you will have a jump. Some rifles will shoot well with a jump, and all factory ammo will have a jump.
So its your choice.

Greg,

Just load it in a ladder test and shoot it, I have seated bullets with less in the case and they have shoot very well, well below sub moa. Someone tested once by shortening the neck until there was nothing left and it still shot good.

I have a 14 twist Cooper 6BR and have found that going out to .180" still works great. Last weekend, I loaded some 65 gr. Vmax and to get them to the lans, they were only about .130" and one group was the best I had every shot with that rifle, 5 shots well below 1/2".

The old 'one caliber rule' is like so manyother internet mumbo jumbo....most true benchrest rifles have zero to .040 FB...and most 62-68gr match bullets are jamed,,,at the jam ther is only .140 to .180 in the case ...and some chambbers are throated even longer ...a coulpla mine are only in the case neck .100 and they all shoot good....so jam em if u can ...as long as the bullets wont get bumped loose dont worry about it....if they are easily pulled or damaged ...use more neck tension....Roger
