Mini-14 at 400 yards?

.17 is a maybe one of these years but would be a debate between HMR and Hornet. I'm nuts for Hornet caliber. For now my .22 Hornet will hold that fort.

I once had a Mini-14, got rid of it for the same reason everyone else does - stupid inaccurate. BUT, if someone wanted a close-quarters gun and loaded it with frangible bullets, there would be a good rig there. You just have to hit your target before he can run 50 yards.

When you do try a 17 HMR, you will kick yourself for not doing it sooner.....
I have both the Hornet and the .17 HMR and I love them equally. I like the HMR when most shots are within 150-175 yards and there are lots of squirrels - minimizing my reloading. I like the Hornet when they are out a bit further. If I didn't reload, the .17HMR makes a lot of sense for everything a .20 or .223 seems a bit much for. When going on a big squirrel safari for several days, it is easy to throw an extra "brick" or two of the HMR rounds in the bag - just to ensure I have something to shoot if I run out of centerfire.

Agree. I have spent many days on prairies where the 17 HMR is the whole day.

No, it isn't as cheap as 22LR, but it is a better value in my experience when it comes to colony rodents and varmints.

No regrets, wish I had done it sooner.

I remember a conversation with an engineer at Ruger when the Mini was 'born'. He was a bit upset that Ruger did not make a couple simple mods to improve accuracy. Something was said to the effect that the target audience would not care how accurate it was.

Sad, because if it was more accurate I would have bought both a Mini-14 and Mini-30.

Find yourself a FightLite SCR lower and add whatever AR15 upper you want. Mini-14 form with AR accuracy?

I know this is thread on the mini 14, but the 30 was thrown in here and there too, so...

I had had an absolutely terrible shooting mini 30...like 4-5" groups at 50 yards...even with Hornady. I ditched it and got an SCR lower and assembled a x39 upper for it...shoots so much better...2.5"ish at 100 with wolf and Tula, and around 1" with Hornady... not precision by any means, but it's a mid range hunting rifle for me... it'll do.

To get a Mini-14 to perform, you're usually gonna need some top-tier custom smithing.

After that, it should "shoot tacks"...
WHat The???
is that seriously Brazed on?
I give it points for ingenuity

The best thing about a Mini 14 is your brass will eject and land 5 benches down from you are.
Amen to that!
I can remember a few times when someone new to High Power shot the match with one, and all I remember of those times is how those rifles launched the brass. Seriously 5 ports down, and it still hit you hard. Forget picking up your brass, it's just gone.

I think that maybe the OP meant to ask,
"If you lean a Mini 14 up against something can you see it at 400yds?"
Yes with a good pair of binoculars. I just don't know if I would waste my time going over to pick it up. Lol How can you ask about a Mini 14 on "Accurate Shooter"? Go over to the shotgun forums if you want uplifting reviews. I wish one of my friends still had one so I could give them crap, This thread is bringing back old memories. Hahahaha
