Mini-14 at 400 yards?

How feasible is it to consider a Mini-14 for 400 yards Appleseed Known Distance clinics? I know, the AR is everyone's go to but I really like the Mini-14 with a 20 round magazine. Without spending beyond optics how feasible is reliably hitting 10 inch dinner plates every time? (or darn close to it)

The tricky "Thing" with, Mini 14's IS, what, Twist Rate is,.. it ?? ( they made, several Twists over, the Years ! )
Then finding, a Bullet that, it will,.. "Shoot" !
Mine went 1.2 inches at, 100 w/ 60 gr Nosler, "Solid Base" bullets ( t'was, the very Best, I could Do ),.. Most group's were,.. WORSE !
Sold it, then went to a Adams Arms, Piston driven, 1-7 twist, VooDoo Barreled, ar-15,..
it's Sub 1 MOA with, most,.. 60 to, 69 grain Bullets !
With, a Geisllie, 2 stage, 2.25 lb. Trigger,.. "Helping Out",.. some !

There is/was a mini14 target, has a balancer on the barrel. Supposedly Ruger says 1 moa after adjusting the harmonic bal for the ammo?? Haven't seen one?

I am assuming you will be shooting from a rest position —?? or prone?
I’m not familiar with Appleseed rules. But it always sounds like fun. jd

Its possible(though very unlikely), but I worry you'll encounter a great deal of frustration with a mini-14.
Get a rifle that shoots well enough to eliminate the rifle being a unknown variable. 400yds is not a super difficult shot but you really should have a precise rifle.

It's 1:9 twist 18.5" barrel. And the FightLite is kinda, sorta, just a little bit interesting but not a Mini-14 so there'd be no reason to not put the whichever upper on the Colt lower I already have since that would be as much Mini-14 as the FL and less expensive. And since if I do that it likely would be a RRA 20" 1:8 twist .223 Wylde chamber upper probably shoot a bit better too. I'd just really like it to work with the Ruger although probably not. sigh

I too like the rotary bolt...a lot. BUT the "Only accurate rifles are interesting" statement truly trump design esthetics for me.
I have read 4-5 yrs ago before the inflation hit, that 800$ would make one somewhat acceptable. Not being well heeled, l vote for the logical, $$ n sense approach.

The mini 14 is thought of as a 50 yard gun

As mentioned, it can be accurized https://www.ruger-mini-14-firearms.com/ruger_mini_prices.php

The one I had wouldnt hold a pie plate at 100 yards. Ruger rebarreled it and sent a 3 inch test target from 50 yards calling it good. Ruger makes junk. Dont try it no matter how much you like it. Only accurate guns are interesting.
But they make better junk than most junk makers. I'm always amazed at people buying Ruger's stuff and spending money to make it perform.

I have a Mini-30 that was rebarrelled to 6mmppc. This was done close to 30 years ago. Heavy barrel, laminated bedded stock and trigger work. At that time the big interest in AR rifles had not started. Back then it would outshoot most ARs. Fun to see the twisted faces of the guys shooting the black rifles
I am guessing it still shoots well but has not left the safe in 20 plus years

The mini-30 was known to be a far more accurate rifle than the Mini-14.

I have one of those barrels in a service rifle upper. I used it to win the Indiana State Championship in service rifle in 2004. I think the last time I fired a match was 2005, and I'm not sure I've had it out of the safe sense then. It's an A2 upper (the started allowing flat tops right after I bought it). Specifically, it's the CMP (or maybe DCM, can't recall the actual model name) upper that RRA used to sell back in the day. I swapped the rear sight to a Bob Jones rear sight because the hood on the RRA sight would tag me in the eyebrow on every shot during sitting rapid. The sight has a double detent which (IIRC) makes the clicks 1/2 moa, but I've slept a time or two since I bought and installed it so I may have a few of those details wrong. The upper has less than 1500 rounds through it, maybe less than 1,000. PM me if you're interested in it.

I definitely could not throw one 400 yds.
If I owned one, I'm pretty sure I'd try to chuck it that far.... Thankfully a roommate of mine had bought one and tried it. Back home, he only had access to a 100 yd range and he figured it would at least be accurate enough for that far. He sold it within a year for a significant loss. The A team sure made them look cool though!
