What is a good mill manufacturer that has inexpensive mills for someone that is just getting started?

How much of a mill are you interested in?
Jet makes a relatively affordable table model mill/drill that is a very nice piece for the home hobbiest. It is all manual feed but for hobby work, don't know what you are looking for.
You can buy power feed attachments and a DRO for it but then you might be in the price range of a larger unit.
Jet has good customer support so if you need something for the machine, they always have the parts.

Do not buy any of the Mills made in China.. Taiwan is ok.. Just so that you know.

Since your looking for a full size knee mill, Bridgeport is the way to go. You can find them from time to time in great shape for around three grand.. look at Evilbay.

Depending where you live a little investigation into local used machinery dealers can be very rewarding.Used Bridgeports are pretty common,,pay attention to the condition of the ways on the X and Y axies and the condition of the spindle bearings)but good buys can be had on Lagun or Index brand machines also,they dont seem as popular but are very serviceable units.Be careful about getting something too old due to parts availability. Of the chinese stuff the JET equipment is pretty good and some of the mills from Grizzley have gotten favorable reviews.Jim
