Millions of rounds of .22 ammo stolen from U.S.-bound trucks on Mexican highway

Two trailer loads of small-caliber ammunition bound for the United States were stolen by armed assailants on a highway in Mexico’s most violent state, Guanajuato, the manufacturer said Friday.

A company representative said about 98.5% of the millions of rounds of ammo stolen earlier this week were .22 caliber, which is seldom used by Mexican drug cartels.

“These will be of no use to them, given that they don’t use these weapons,” said security analyst Juan Ibarrola, who also acts as spokesman for the Tecnos Industries company

The .22 rounds are used mainly in rifles for target practice or extremely small game. Mexican cartels prefer larger, high-velocity ammunition for AK-47 and AR-15 rifles or 9 mm weapons.

The total quantity was not clear, but was estimated to be about 7 million rounds. The ammunition is sold in the United States under the Aguila brand.

Though low-powered, .22 ammunition can be lethal depending on where a person is hit, and from what range.

Mexico has also occasionally caught people selling improvised “pen” guns, single-shot devices disguised as pens that use .22 rounds.

The ammunition is made in Cuernavaca, a city just south of the capital, and was being taken north on trucks to the United States when the shipment was hijacked, The drivers were later found alive.

First, at least they didn't kill the drivers, That's good. Second, bad intel on their part, as they were probably looking for the larger rifle rounds mentioned above.
And just maybe someone may be floating down the river instead of crossing it because of the bad intel.

If you have never been to Mexico ... don't bother.

Away from the tourist controlled areas and you are thrown back into the lawless West 150 years ago.
My experience in Mexico (real Mexico, not Cozumel) was completely different. Some of the finest people I’ve ever met. But that was 20 years ago and maybe things have changed. There’s no doubt that some areas are sketchy but the same is true for all countries.

A buddy of mine drove from Panama to Texas. Was arrested in some small town in Mexico for a driving "violation". Spent Friday night through Sunday evening in the local hoosegow. Took his car keys and when he was released, his car had a couple hundred more miles on the odometer. As previously posted, out of the tourist, ex pat areas and the maquiladoras, it's the wild wild lawless west. This is the best description I could find.

I guess this is better than blaming it on a Russian cyber attack!
After they(?) hacked into the gas pipeline, then lately into JBS beef packers at which a 11 million dollar ransom was paid it makes you wonder who will be next.

Sadly this may become the norm - building products may be next. Have you seen the price of lumber lately?

It's a "brave new world." If I was young and in better health I'd move off the grid and become a mountain man - a least I like to dream about it. :)

Wifely however would never go for it.:(
