Mill opinions???

I bought a lathe, a Grizzly G0709 to be specific. I’ve had it three years and thus far I’ve been tickled with it and its performance but more importantly their support. I have called them for different things three different times and they have always spent as much time as I needed and really tried to help me…all three times resulting in positive outcomes. I’ve been looking for over 2 years for a mill and I haven’t run across anything that didn’t look like a project…I have limited time in my shop so I don’t want to spend what time I do get out there working on a machine. I’m headed down the path of just buying a new one.

So I had about decided to buy this mill because from my measurements I need 23” x axis travel for some of my longer stocks.

The issue is I’m starting to think this mill is too big for the foundation (appears like 6” with a standard footer) in my shop (weight wise) and I have a 18x28 shop that has a standard overhead door. The next concern is I have a wall 7 foot from the overhead door that has a 36” door in it that is a dog leg to get through and into the shop area. The house is on one side and a fence between me and the neighbor is on the other side that I have 54” clearance so a forklift or skid steer I cannot get back to the rear double door on the shop.

I’ve not looked to much into the Precision Matthews because getting parts can be a nightmare (I know this by having a buddy who went the PM route, loves the machines but says some parts can be a challenge).

What other options are there that might not weigh as much and not be a project? Grizzly doesn’t make a mid range mill it seems with that x axis travel. Size wise a Deckel would be about perfect but those appear to be as rare as a henweigh.

I would normally say long story short but too late for that, my only requirements right now seem to be less than a ton (1000lbs would be about perfect), 23” x axis travel or more, able to get through my 36” dogleg door mess and a DRO. Any suggestions on something to look at?

If you are saying you have a 6" concrete floor I wouldnt worry at all I have several machines that weigh 5000# and I moved them in with a 5000# capacity lift truck which weighs like 10,000# and had no issues at all

I would not think weight would be a problem. It is a dead load that is not jumping up and down. The head can be rotated to reduce the height, might even be shipped to you with the head upside down. Dusty is correct about removing the table to get through the door. Good move to buy new as a lot of used mills are pretty much junk.

I got a Bridgeport down and back up my basement stairs. You dont need 6" of concrete for that machine. Bridgeports (and clones) are still lighter milling machines. You will never wish you had a smaller or lighter machine. Even a clapped out Bridgeport is more than accurate enough for stock work. Mills are very basic machines and are easily disassembled to get through tight spots.

Go check out the Precision Mathew's machines…. The Bridgeport clones are good machines.

And get a DRO system… SOOO much nicer with the DRO

No worries on the slab, overthinking it... even a typical 4" slab is fine (assuming some reinforcing steel or mesh) provided it's on solid, compressed substrate. If properly compacted underneath, there's nothing to give way- typical 2,500-3,000 psi mix could take the weight of your mill on about a square inch of it.

Doors are easily removed, walls opened up and then replaced assuming it's not masonry.
Easy for me to say I guess, my "day job" is a commercial construction PM.

As far as the dog leg and tight clearances, pipe is your friend provided you've got reasonably flat and hard solid surfaces to traverse.
If you've never rolled heavy machinery using some small diameter, heavy wall pipe underneath you'd be surprised how effortless it can be.

Overthinking, over analysis and paralysis via analysis are all conditions I suffer from…thanks guys!

Decisions, decisions….

I have seen several nice ones on Facebook groups related to machinery and sales of machinery.
