Military brass 7.62 resizing

Just got a pant load of 7.62 brass. After resizing I went to put an empty case in my Rem700 and I am having a hard time locking down the bolt. I have run it through the trimmer and every thing is to length. I understand that the nato brass is thicker.

Take a resized, unprimed case and blacken it all over with

a felt tipped pen.

Slowly chamber the case until resistance is met.

Unload the case and examine where the rub marks are.

This should show where the problem is.

If the brass was fired in an M60 machine gun it will have

circular ejector marks and you'll need a small base die to get

anywhere with this brass.

Tell us what the the inked case test shows.

Regards,

Steve

I tried inking a few of the cases with no rub marks showing. Should I just keep the NATO brass for my AR10 and just use factory brass in the bolt gun?

Please look at those inked cases carefully.

If they won't chamber freely there's got to be a bind somewhere.

Use a magnifier and good lighting.

Pay close attention to the shoulder area and body near the head of the case.

The ink may not rub off but should show the areas of hard contact.

Your die may not be sizing enough or the shoulder needs to be set back a bit more.

A lot of surplus brass has been fired in machine guns and is a pain to work with.

Regards,

Steve

PS Does the re sized brass chamber freely in your other rifle ??

The other rifle is a DPMS LR308. The brass works fine in that rifle. I will put more ink on the brass and give it another go. Thanks for the input I appreciate it.

I have been down this rocky road before. To save yourself a lot of trouble get you a FL small base size die and size all the cases the first time with it then after that you can use a regular size die. Those machine guns really stretch a case and their chambers are large and let them swell.

madbomr .......

You should compare your handloads to one of your fireformed cases. That will show you exactly what's going on. This device shows you the exact clearance that YOUR handloads will have in YOUR particular chamber.

The Digital Headspace Gauge eliminates the guesswork, and it works on all calibers. This will show you if you 'need' a small base die. It doesn't require a collection of bushings or special tools, and this is very simple to operate. You can read all about this tool on our website.
