Mile and beyond.. what do/did you shoot? Minimum caliber recommendations.

Tons of talk on 1000yds and the cartridges but less on a mile (1760yds) and beyond? What caliber did you use, and if multiple, what was the minimum caliber you were able to get fairly consistant hits? Also, what altitude were you shooting? Looking to get into the game and just curious what others are using.
Cheers,
Hawk

I have had a .338-408 CT wildcat built for this type of shooting but have not gotten to set it up and shoot yet.
We shot my .338LM at 1000 without much trouble so my friend moved a target to about 1500 we will be trying out.
Should be soon my S&B is on the way from a forum sponsor! Thanks PG

I shot a 300 win mag overseas a bunch for stress relief with some buds. We shot that past a mile but the bullets didn't always hit right. Still drove me to want to have a 300 built and so far it is my only full custom rifle and it shoots just as good if not better than the one I got to play around with. Oh its the 190grn NAVY load.

In 2005 I saw article on a group of guys shooting at 1 mile and they mentioned that the smallest calibre used successfully was a 300 Ultra Mag. It got me thinking and I started to do research, ask questions about this same topic. At that time I recieved the Sierra Balistic program and really wasted night after night to see what was feasable and if I had anything in my Vault that would get it done. Low and behold I had two according to the program. 6.5X284 NRA prone rifle and a 7mm Rem Mag Remmy Sendero. I set out some steel at the farm and started at 1000 and worked my way out. At 1450yards my 6.5 ran out of elevation on the scope. Not wanting to mess with my Prone rifle all set up for matches I went to the 7mm which for some reason is spooky accurate. like 3/8 MOA at 600 yards and 5/8 at 1000 off a rest and maybe the best I can actually hold elevation.

We made it happen in Dec of 06 with 162gr Amax and that Sendero. hit ratio was 4 for 7 on the first outing. and just a little better the next time out. Target was a 2' wide X 3' high 1" thick steel plate hung off the gournd with a radio set on VOX behind the plate. Every hit was a clear crisp Ring on the radio. no mistaking that wonderful sound at 1 mile. I shot into a side hill and could see my impacts to boot. And I wanted to do it off a Bypod on the ground with no rear bag. Not a bench.
Why? because some one told me I couldnt get it done with a 7mm Rem Mag.
Of my friends later a 300 WM shooting 190's. a 243 Rouge ( 243 WSSM) 115 DTAC's and a 338 LM.

With the new 180's out in 7mm That would be a great choice for steel. I doubt Ill change as the Sendero is my long range critter getter and the AMAX is a proven choice for that.

Best of luck

Last weekend I was in the desert shooting beyond a mile (targets were at 1,800 yards and 1,650 yards) with my brother and a friend. We were not Hunting, only shooting armor plate steel. Both targets were 18x24 rectangle. All rifles were hitting both targets. We had the following for rifles:

338LM - running 300 gr. smks - handloads;

284 Winchester - 180 Berger vlds
284 Winchester Improved - Berger VLDs

7WSM - Cauterucio 189s
