anyone have any experience with a mil dot scope for ground hogs? does anyone think or know whether or not it would be effective?

I have used Mil Dot scopes for years hunting Prairie Dogs. They are very useful in holding off for wind and elevation.

if you can get one with hash marks and better yet half mill marks rather than the dots they are better for ranging accuracy because p-dogs are only on the average of 9 to 10 inches... 8)

I live in Wyoming and shot P Dogs all the time. I've gone to all mil-dot recticals on my varmint rifles. Just try look through as many as you can before picking one. There is a big difference between brands in regard to how thick the cross hairs are. For example, Bushnell Elites are great scopes but have terrible thick recticals. At 15x they almost cover up a PDog at 200yds. Milletts 4-16 TRS scope has nice fine lines with half/hash marks like Coyoteklr suggests. I love that scope.

Nightforce makes a great mil-dot. They are circles with a small dot in the middle. You can see right through them.

i have a bushnell elite 2.5-16 x 42. i've done shooting but i usually just dial the scope. thought about trying to learn what is possible with a mil dot but haven't worked with it much. got sierra balistic software that has mil dot chart. shot a few pumpkins last year but not real far out, just to see what it did. worked pretty well it seemed like it. need to see what each dot actually does i suppose. range finder. info. walla i guess.

If I'm not mistaken but I think the bushnell elite or most mildots for that matter are 3.44moa apart. So for my 6x47 Lapua I can git out to almost 400 yards with my first mildot as long as I'm on 10 power and the next mildot would be 6.88moa which would be a little past 500 yards and the windage is the same. Hope this kinda helps you out just make sure your scope is marked with what power to be on for the mils to be correct.

I just bought a Bushnell 10X MilDot scope and really like the looks of the reticle the cross hairs are not too big and the dots are about right for what I want. In their paper work they say that 1 Mil Dot equals 36" at 1000 yards so at 100 yards 1 mil would equal 3.6 inches. I think the MD reticle would be great for chucks. I use mine on a 17 FB XP-100 for prairie dog shooting. It's the 6-18x Nikon Buckmasters. The mrad is cald. for 12x in the Nikons and i use it at 18 where the mil unit now becomes 2.4 IPHY between dots, and the dot becomes ~1/2" instead of the mil-std. ~.75" I use mine for windage mostly.

You need to understand the scope you are looking at and see if the mil-dot's "zoom" with the power adjustment. The more desireable is that the reticle is on the front focal plane and does not "zoom" the dots are always the same size. Most of the cheaper scopes are not front focal plane reticals. Most of the cheaper scopes are spaced 1 mil at the top power and get larger as you go down in power. I bought a cheep mil-dot scope that is 6-24, if I had it to do over I would not go over 16X if it did not have a front focal plane reticle as 24X is too much a lot of the time.

I use a mil dot scope for huntin groundhogs...personally i prefer to dial and use the mill dots as a hold off for a quick follow up shot if needed...as far as using the mil dots how theyre supposted to be used.. as a range finding recticle...i dont think they work very well on groundhogs because groundhogs vary in size so much..if you know the exact size of the target they work perfect..just make sure u dont get MOA and MIL confused...
