Midwest competitive shooting?

I'm new to the forum here and new to reloading but I have a feeling that once I'm into the full swing of reloading for my .243 and testing loads, etc I will not be satisfied with shooting unless I can get into some competitive shooting eventually.

The more I look into and research some of this I'm really interested in the 6 Norma BR rifles and I'm a Savage kinda guy and I see they have a production rifle in that caliber. Would a Savage production rifle be good enough to get started into a little competitive shooting in the Midwest area? I'm not looking to break any world records or anything but would love to hang out and shoot with guys that like shooting as much as I do.

I need to do a little more searching to see how many opportunities I'd even have to shoot in the Midwest area. I'm in SE Iowa and would be interested in knowing what kind of competitions exist within a 500-600 mile range of where I'm at. On the same note, are there any guys reading this from Iowa, especially Eastern Iowa that I could pick there brain a little face to face sometime?

Sorry for all the questions, just a nooobie looking for a little guidance. ;D

How far are you from StLouis? We have alot of matches to shoot. There is also a club called show me bench rest in NE missouri near Downing.

Eastern Nebraska Gun Club.(Omaha) Millcreek Gun Club Desoto Kansas (Kansas City) Van Meter Pistol Revolver Club.(Des Moines Iowa) Check web sights. These are the closest to you. Nice ranges and great people. Sorry about not posting links. Lloyd

It looks like the club near Downing would be a good possibility as well as St. Louis. Is there a web site for the St Louis club?

Anything in Northern Illinois or possibly SW Wisconsin?

I'm looking for anything within 500-600 miles of the Iowa City area, the closer the better obviously.

I see where you are on the map. Downing isn't far at all from you and only 2 1/2 hrs from here. StLouis would be about 4 hrs from Iowa City. It's in wright city, look up Shootingstl.com for info.
There is also another club in Spickard MO. just to the west of Downing near hwy 65 ,both are benchrest clubs.

Looks like Downing, MO club has a 1000 yd range and is mainly a bench rest club. I'm more interested in F class? 600 yd prone. I might eventually want to try some 1000 yd stuff but I'm leaning more towards the prone shooting style, something that actually equates somewhat into actual hunting style shooting I guess.

I have a place I can shoot out to about 400 yds on a piece of family owned ground but I'd like to try some 600 yd shooting.

Any opinions on the Savage 12 F-class rifle in 6 Norma BR?

St. Louis Benchrest has 600 yd F-Class matches. You should also look at the Rivoli R&P club in New Windso, IL. They host 1000 yd Prone and F-Class matches.

If you want big time, check out Lodi, Wisconsin. They host the Mid-west Palma Championships. Also a lot of shoot for F-class out to 1000 yds.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I found a Milan Rifle Club near the Quad Cities that would only be about an hour and a half drive away but their website looks to be under construction with no way to get contact info. I guess I'll check back at a later date on that one.

The 6br is a good cartridge but a little light for windy conditions. Very accurate round for 600 yrd and closer. StLouis has 11 fclass matches scheduled for the year and all are at 600yrds. There is also a small club in Barry IL. called pasa park that has 600yd matches that is a great group to shoot with.

One more question. Are there any .243's being used in the 600 yd competitions? I see Savage has a Model 12 Long Range Precision available in a .243 with a 9.25 twist rate and 26" barrel, I wonder how that gun would perform with good loads.

Welcome IA Shooter:

I just started shooting 6mm at 600yd in your area last season.

Three locations for 600yards besides Milan, IL.

Van Meter, IA by Des Moines (1st match of the season 4/20-21-2013) prone or Fclass, their schedule at www.accurateandreliablerifle.com

Lodi, WI

Barry, IL (Pasa Park) across from Hannibal, MO

great people at all of these locations

In WI...

Columbus Sportsman's Association 600 Benchrest.

Winnequah Gun Club, Lodi Mid & Long range F Class.

La Crosse 600 F Class.

Eau Claire 600 F Class.

Columbus Wisconsin, St.Louis, Vapor Trail Valley in Northwest Mo, are all great places for benchrest. I live in Eastern Iowa and go to these often. Terry who posted above is very knowledgeable and shoots F-class along with benchrest.

Milan has a lot of great matches And is a very nice range. I’d encourage you to check out the ‘ten state schedule’ that Is on the Illinois State Rifle and Pistol association website. It lists a lot of matches In the Midwest along with contact info.
the 2021 schedule can be found at www.illinoishighpower.org. They have some really good shooters there and a lot of great people.

There is also Oak Hills in the same genreal location, and they shoot a lot of matches there as well. Their matches seem be have More vintage military guns shooting, but they’re lots of fun and great people as well.

And as others have mentioned already, Van Meter is a nice range and so are a lot of the clubs in WI.
