MidwayUSA

Watch Midway sale items, I have just had a round with Midway over back ordering items on sale and having them for sale at the regular price. I ordered a set of rings on sale out of stock no
problem! First available date out about two weeks, next date out
another two and half weeks. OK supplier backlog!
THEN on 4/03/08 the same rings are on the website available!!
I then checked the back order status and the available date had been pushed all the way to 6/10/08???
I ordered a set, same item, and the sale went through, reg. price, shipped today 4/04/08. When I called to complain all I got was the same old song and dance I've been told before!!!
I don't call this good business myself. Midway did away with the back order that had a couple other items on it.
A buddy I hunt with, is having somewhat of a problem similar to this with them also.

I am no fan of Midway. Couple years ago, I ordered a chamber reamer from them. But my gunsmith would not use it because it had a solid pilot. Midway does not sell reamers with floating pilots. Called them, and they refused to take it back, even if unused, because "gunsmith items are not returnable; check the catalog". The catalog said "some" gunsmith items were not returnable, but did not specify which. Wrote complaint letter to Larry Potterfield, never received an answer.

In addition, watch their S&H charges; very high. They are making a hugh profit on it. Do corporations pay tax on the income above actual mailing costs on S&H?

Midsouth told me they charge actual shipping costs. I am not certain that is true, but I do believe their S&H is lower than some others.

Have bought many items from Midway over the years: for the most part everything has been "OK", with only minor problems. Am very impressed with MidSouth. Called to order 500 count box of Sierra #1380 at the "old price". They were on back order. They assured me that they would honor the "old price", even though they were back ordered. 2 weeks later they arrived at the original advertised price. MidSouth seems to be very good company to deal with.:)

tenring,

yes, they have to pay taxes on that income.

the person that told you they don't make money on freight is either lying or really doesn't know.

i don't know their volume, but based off of experiance, they probably pocket 50% +/-.

i don't use them much anymore because every order has a back order, and they insist on shipping what they have asap, then they double dip on the freight. sure its their strategy.

Keep in mind that shipping cost have increased dramatically in recent months. The shippers are also applying special surcharges for more zip codes than ever before.

I advise folks to keep a laundry list of multiple items they wish to buy, then try to combine orders whenever possible. With any of the vendors you'll end up paying more in shipping if you buy just one or two items.

Also, consider Grafs. They include shipping in the price of nearly all items. There is a "handling fee" of about $5, but the actual shipping is included on most items.

I just received my Forester 7mmsaum BR dies from Grafs that were backordered, and they didn't charge for shipping or handling. The dies were part of a bigger order and all that stuff showed up earlier....

Midsouth has always had the best price on bullets, brass, and a lot of other acc. I check their catalog or call them before I buy anywhere else. Grafs is a good place to shop too. Seems like when prices take a hike all the others seem to go up more than these two. Just an observation. Bill

I am about ready to boycott midway altogether. The last order I placed took 2 weeks to get here via USPS priority. I call Midway after the first week and they never looked my order up or got my name or address. The shipping label showed a ship date of three days before it arrived at my door. I guess I fell into that 10% that doesnt ship the same day. I have started ordering from Midsouth and Sinclair.

Midway has done me wrong also, ordered about 6 items and didn't know until the sale went through and I received the conformation that an item was on backorder. They wanted to charge me $9.00 S.H. for a $15.00 item. I canceled everything and will never use them again. It would be nice to somehow send this post to them, I couldn't even find an email address to complain to. SPM

Midway's sales pitch used to be "Fair and Honest Shipping."
Fair and honest my arse. $8.00 shipping for something that they could stick in a bubble wrap envelope and mail for 2 bucks. Never again.

Their prices are getting even higher as opposed to other suppliers too. I think it's time to write them off. Bill

Gentleman,
FWIW, my understanding is that none of the top management at Midway are really "shooters". Anyway, the market they really are selling to is "Joe Bubba". That's who buys all the silly stuff they sell. Those of us who really do know will find somewhere else to satisfy our needs.

Check it out...Another thread about Midway and their negative experiences:

tenring:

Send that solid pilot reamer to Dave Kiff. He will grind it for a removable pilot and give you a pilot and screw for about $30.00.

I have had several solid pilot reamers converted over the years.

They work even better because they are long in the front end.

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm a weekend shooter paper and varmints don't order a lot. I had not put 2 and 2 together until this thread. Everytime I order something small is BO'd the shipping on that usually as much as the part.

BO'd stuff should ship NO CHARGE!

Thanks

Here's another post full of complaints. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=338680

I won't say that I won't order from them again but I definately look elswhere first. I really like Midsouth and I am even getting better at using their website. I find that if you use the "Direct and Advanced Search" it really helps you find what your looking for.

I really don't feel responsible to help Larry P pay for his commercials, etc. "And thanks for the business!" MY ASS

Just a thought: Has anyone ever considered e-mailing Larry Potterfield to up-date him personally on these issues? I have in the past, and,HIS) e-mail is available on their website. I've had concerns as have all of us, but i've always had it resolved with an e-mail to Larry. Being upfront and polite about my concern has always worked for me,Just My experience, your mileage may vary).I've also e-mailed him about items they do not carry, and in a couple months time, they became items they now stock.,Chrony LED lite,12v) for all lighting conditions)...I like you, feel that items I order that show up B/O after I order, should not be shipped at my expense. It's different if I know about it 1st and still order it. Rick, New Berlin,Pa

Reloader243,you make perfect sense. But all the Midway haters want to vent. I have never ordered anything that said it was in stock and had it backordered. I also usually order enough items to justify the 8.00 shipping charge.

I get my packages very quickly, the last order I placed was on a Tues. morning and it was sitting on my porch Fri. afternoon when I got home from work.

Greg110 you have an awfully elitist attitude.... And quite frankly I couldn't care less if one person at Midway was a shooter as long as they have the inventory and it is shipped in a timely manner. If you do not want to order from Midway then don't. I do not appreciate being labeled a Bubba because I do. My last order was Berger bullets, a Rifle Basix trigger, and cleaning gear. I don't see anything silly or bubbaesque about any of these items.
