Midway USA cuts their shipping costs

Received a small shipment from Midway today. Ordered on July 4th - free shipping day. Two boxes Berger bullets and a dozen brushes. It was delivered by USPS in a white paper bag and no receipt inside. I sent them an e-mail and here is the reply:

"Thank you for your email concerning your recent order. In order to reduce costs and speed up our shipping times, and thus provide better all-around service to our Customers, we no longer issue paper invoices for orders placed on www.midwayusa.com.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Should you need a printed copy of your orders, you may view your full order history and print invoices through the "Your Account" link at the top of any midwayusa.com web page."

Wonder whether Potterfield will pass the savings along?

I have noticed recently that Midway's shipping prices have been very reasonable. I went away from them for a while due to crazy shipping costs, but recently they have had the best prices.

I'm not a fan of the bags they ship items in now instead of using boxes. I had a redding die box come open and bounce around in the bag and a hinge broken on a 50rd case. They replaced the case but it shouldn't have been broken in shipping if it was packaged right.

Shipping is down but the prices went up when they started that. I still buy from them since they have what I want most of the time.

Bought some stuff today from Larry...........

ordered at noon and shipped 3 hrs later...Surepost...

that's where UPS picks up the product and then delivers it to your PO

not sure who makes what $$ on that system...but its OK...

still shipping was $10....had 2 boxes 308/110 V max in order...

other odds & ends...

I have shipped a lot of items, just the other day I shipped a 308 rifle weighing 20lbs. The distance was 250 miles, the box was 5x8x52 . Along with $1,750 in insurance, it cost me $40.00.

I have noticed that shipping cost have gone up this year and I have people accusing me of ripping them off. I assure you this is not the case.

A lot of people are raising their cost of the product and just charging a $5.00 handling fee.

If you ship to a remote mountainous area, YOUR GOING TO PAY, believe me, I have been burnt several times. That's when my stamp bot gives me a ridiculous price, I check to see where the city is before printing the postage. I know computers are not perfect, but my Stamp.com software is usually on the money and will even tell me if I am using the wrong package for the postage. Usually I change the size setting or Postage Label, and it will take care of the problem. Another words, it's almost fool proof. The only rejection I have received was MY mistake for hitting he wrong button.

Just a note to everyone. If you use Stamps.com and usually ship a lot of big boxes weighing under 50lbs., the price is unbelievably lower. I always verify this with the Postal employees before sending. I want my package to get there timely.

I use to hate the Post Office, but now I use them 98% of the time, but mostly because they are 15 minutes away. No, that and their usually the cheapest! Sometimes the Postal employees are stunned at some of the prices. They checked on package for me the other day. If I had of shipped it from them, the cost would have been around $45.00 . Me using Stamps.com, the total cost as less than $23.00. Plus I am shipping 2 day Priority mail in THEIR packages. Can't beat that.

Dennis

PS: And get the Pro Version of Stamps.com, I assure you a 5th grader can use it. And it's so simple to track shipments. Get a scale that goes up 50lbs plus. They give you one with the sign up package, but it only goes up to 5lbs. I use my fishing digital gauge on packages weighing more, and for the record, it's pretty dayum accurate.

Midway shipped me a $700 Colt Upper by simply slapping an address label on the Colt Box and taping it shut with 3 measly pieces of 2" packing tape. One piece of tape failed in transit. USPS Priority Mail, about The Best Deal Going... Amazed the upper arrived at all. 4500mi of transit. Oh yeah, I had to pay $10 extra for being in Alaska over and above the Priority Mail calculated cost.

Now they're shipping contents in "bags"? If you got over 2lbs, flat rate box is The Deal... 7000gr equals one pound. A box of 100 70gr 6mm bullets is a pound. A box of 100 6.5 140gr bullets is 2lbs... Packing weighs something...

Pretty damn pathetic Midway couldn't even wrap the Colt box in brown paper to protect the contents from interested persons along the way, and protect the box for its customer.

Glad you guys like Midway, but Brownells has the unbeatable deal: an Amazon Prime like annual fee for 12mo free shipping to you and reimbursement on your cost for returns; along with no time limit for merchandise returns you aren't happy with... Nobody does better than that!

Oh, and BTW; USPS.com is a great site to do your postage. Used them for years. 15% savings up front on postage and easy to use.
Maybe Stamps is worth using for First Class Mail if do a lot of that? Not that many pkgs I send under 14oz though... Easy/Breazy with a credit card to send anything anywhere in the world...

@ Hogan:

I had a Medium Flat Rate box sent to me with 50 lbs of bullets inside. I believe now there is no weight limit on flat rate packages.

BUT, I am totally shocked the box showed up in one piece. When it was handed to me, it was like grabbing a "soft" sponge ball. I can't believe the box even stayed together. In fact some areas were broken through and I lost about 25 bullets. I didn't worry about it, but I now advise all who send me packages, especially heavy ones to properly pack them, or break them up into 2 boxes.

I don't ship out of the country, nor do I import. So I have no clue the cost to do so.

Have a great day,
Dennis

I ordered two boxes of Hornady SST bullets, 7mm 162's, so they had some weight. They came in the white plastic mailer. One box was crushed. The other was split open and most all of the bullets were loose in the bag.

Shipping price was good, I can live with the damaged and split boxes but it shouldn't happen. At least the bag didn't tear open and bullets get lost.

All in all, Midway usually has what I want in stock and shipping isn't horrible. Between them and Brownell's, that's where I shop most of the time. I try to wait for sales and coupons too.

I hate to say it, but most hired shipping clerks are not trained to properly package the good their shipping. It's almost an art to package something and keep it secure during it's travels.

Heavy Craft Paper works wonders with heavy large items.

I worked for a mfrg co that did patterned laminates (think Formica). They had rolls of sticky, translucent "tape" that they used to cover the surfaces to prevent scratches before installation. There were always partial nubs being discarded and asked supe for permission to liberate one.

It is TUFF, sticks like crazy and just the thing to wrap any box in. My roll is abt 14" tall and have maybe three lifetimes use left being abt 10" dia. I do have to razor off a section for the stamps as they can be iffy when it comes to sticking.

IIRC there is a limit to wgt on the med and large flat rates. I saw just recently in the PO that the smallies definitely have been downgraded for legal wgt.

Sounds like someone needs to hire the wife of Randy Robinett ;) That lady knows how to package bullets for shipping ;) 8)

to quote another poster, Midway charges AK residents $10 extra beyond the universal flat rate if the shipment weighs over 1 lb. It's bs because flat is flat. it actually prevents me from ordering from them. geez, Missouri bullet co sent me a flat rate full of lead bullets that weighed over 60lbs, and they sent it for the low $15 flat rate. Midway needs to rethink that extra charge.

Postal flat rate is the same price, going to all
57 states as OBAMA would say.
I see no reason for a co using the postal
service not to use their boxes, they are FREE.
USPS delivers faster and cheaper than anyone
else, for small items. LDS

The Postal System has been working hard to restore their services. FedEx, UPS, and others hurt them bad, then finally someone woke up. It's still going to take years for the USPS to regain their market share, BUT they are trying.

People still have bad fellings about them.

Dennis

FWIW, I use them more now than I was using them last year. And I really don't want to say it, I have not had a claim with them in the last 2 years. I hope I didn't jinx myself on this one!

What hurt the USPS, is the USPS. Their mandated payments to pre-fund health care benefits for Postal Retirees for 75 years into the future is the biggest problem. The health care payments account for 80%, or $9.2 Billion of loss. One of my neighbors retired from the USPS and explained the problems to me. Their dealings in the real estate market also contributed to their financial mess.
