Midway dropped my Winchester brass

same thing with 7mm-08, notification came yesterday also. This happened a couple of years ago with Midway. I had some .264 WM brass backordered, and they finally cancelled my order. funny thing was it was available a week or two later, but $5 or so more. I stopped doing business with them for years over this. In fact, I just started ordering from them again in the last 6 months or so. that happened 6-7 years ago. It left a pretty sour taste in my mouth for them. But the thing is, in this case (7mm-08), I didn't have it backordered, just the email when available set, since December of 2014. So for 16 months its been out of stock!!! Cannot blame them for dropping the product!! I just picked up 100pcs last week from a gent here, that will last a couple of years. and the truth is lapua makes it, so no big loss.

Olin who is the Winchester ammo supplier has dropped the brass and other reloading components business. For their ammo business they out source all their demand for brass. They must have decided that the earnings/return on brass was not worth it. The last box of Winchester ammo I bought was pitiful in terms of quality. After shooting it I had to polish it because of pitting on the base. I suspect Remington is headed in the same directon.

The local Bass Pro has a bunch of 50 ct Winchester brass bags. I recently picked up a bag of 30-06 and 243. Hornady brass seems to be everywhere locally, Bass Pro, Gander mountain, etc.

Seems to be the opposite here. Every store in town is getting a shipment of Winchester brass.
Could you advise the location... Here in NC, if you ask for unprimed brass, you get a blank stare or the response that it seems to be unavailable!

Thx!

I use 7-08 to form my .260 Rem brass. Lately, it's been coming to my LGS from Hornady. Switched to HDY and it works fine.

I contacted several suppliers, Midway included. Responses were similar. The consensus is that ammunition makers are focusing more on loaded ammunition due to market conditions. Also, it seems that Olin is now outsourcing the brass used in their ammunition(Winchester), therefore quality of brass could be "spotty". The belief seems to be that the major ammunition manufacturers are concentrating solely on loaded ammo. That is the input I received.

My opinion is that since Holding Companies such as ATK(Federal & Speer), and similar entities who own Remington, Winchester, etc. are concentrating only on their bottom line. No offense to the accountants who may be members of this forum, but when the "bean counters" get control, products such as components that don't make a significant impact to the contribution margin are either sold off, or only produced to meet demand for higher margin products. Loaded ammo has a higher profit margin than components do.

Hopefully, this will change. At the age of 73, I'm not gonna' hold my breath! I worked 30 yrs for the largest corporation in the world and saw first hand how it works.

Good wishes & Happy Easter!

Look up brass on face book . There are a lot of different brass supply sights both commercial and private people that have brass they don't need any more .

Just looked there is 13 boxes Win. 225 plus about 40 rounds that are loaded, didn't look to see with what. But you can always pull the bullets. I had the rifle but sold it and the guy didn't wan't the brass. If I would have known what it was I would have kept it. It belonged to a guy that passed away.

Joe,
The 13 boxes of 225 brass,is it new brass? How much to you want for it?

I got the same email about 218 bee brass. Kind of scares me thinking I might be up a creek for a rifle that I love to shoot and has alot of sentimental value to me! Guess we will have to see how it all plays out. On another note, depending on caliber, I strongly suggest giving PPU brass a close look. It is as cheep or cheeper than winchester and the 22-250 brass I just bought is in my opinion far superior to wichester. It also seems to be in in stock in alot of the calibers mentioned here. Just a thought!

Don't know if this is posted elsewhere, but I just received notification that Midway would not be carrying the three calibers of Winchester brass that I was interested in, 22 Hornet, 22-250 and 300 Win Mag. I assume it applies to other calibers but I have not checked to be sure.

I agree with the above post. Get Privi Partizan brass from Cabelas or other places. I bought 500 pieces of 22 Hornet PPU brass when I couldn't find Winchester. Excellent brass that is annealed very well from the factory. Every bit as good as Winchester, if not even a little better because the excellent annealing job.

I think theyre making that many 22 shells. Folks are paying double for cheap junk that aint shot a 22 in 35yrs. Still panicked

I believe this also, but still think there is more to the shortages then just some people hording. I've used some of the new .22 ammo, Winchester, Remington, Federal, etc, over the last few years and it is junk. The common 22 ammo one could get 40 years ago was/is better, a lot better!
If you get a chance to buy some of the old stuff that has been stored correctly at a home auction/yard sale or where ever, don't hesitate, buy it!

Most of the people I know have stopped buying ammo and some even stopped reloading any where close to as much as they used to. They are just refusing to pay the through the roof prices!

In my opinion, the manufacturers mentioned above are as much a part of the conspiracy as the "gentleman" residing in the white house!!!!!

I agree that there is some kind of government interaction in this whole shortage business. However you are dead wrong about their being a gentleman in the white house!!!!
