Message to Members about Demands...

In recent days I've been receiving a barrage of emails and PMs demanding I immediately perform some task. Requests to have more free classifieds because guys have reached their limit. Some guys want me to resize their photos, or tell them how to install software. One guy even wanted me to work up a load for him on Quickload. Of course 95% of these individuals expect I should do this stuff immediately... and for free.

I just want to explain something... In addition to moderating the Forum, and vetting all new members, and answering emails, and trying to answer questions, I write the stories. Lots of stories. Individually, I produce more stories every month than two NRA magazines do with squads of writers and multiple editors. All while moderating a Forum with 45,000 members.

I have released 9988 Daily Bulletin stories, and nearly 600 long-format stories in the main site. I work on stories EVERY DAY of the Year. Yes even on Holidays. I haven't had a true vacation (where I don't work at least 4 hours/day on the site) since April 2016.

Here is an example of what I do.

To create this story took work. I ran down the specs, I confirmed components with the owner, I tracked down the aftermarket XLR Buttstock, I found a video, and I edited the photos. This story went pretty fast, but some can take 5 or 6 hours.

Please understand this when you send PMs or emails demanding immediate assistance.

I honestly don't think many gun-writers could put that story together as fast as I did. And I know none of them are also running a Forum with 45,000 members.

I work on the site over 3000 hours per year. Time is precious. Please keep that in mind.

I'm afraid it is a sign of the times. I am truly, and I mean TRULY appalled that some have the absolute gall to act this way, but appears there are more and more expecting to be waited on hand and foot, no, not expecting, but demanding. It sort of reflects the sorry state of affairs some thing have lead to.

Forum Boss-Turtles all the way down. This site keeps me informed, up to date, and most of the time smarter than before and smiling. Don't know how you can improve the site, but don't let complainers get to you. You're doing a superlative job, the vast majority here support your work! Well done! Don't pay attention to the whiners! Hip, hip, hooray for Forum Boss!
 
As long as you let everyone know, like you just did, don't worry. Don't answer anything you don't want to answer and because of the volume, don't answer anything that is not a direct impact on the forum. I think it is a matter of members not knowing what your job entails. Now they know!
 
You’re a victim of your success. People come here and see this very professional and well run website and assume it’s a big business with a staff to match. It’s not like when you walk up to your LGS and understand that it’s just one or two people running the whole place. I have a friend who runs a website with a forum like Accurate Shooter and he let me see some of the hundreds of PM’s and emails he receives and it blew me away. Everything you complain about here and a lot more. Demands that he ban people , delete threads because they’re offended somehow , settle petty disputes , investigate thefts , etc... Sooo many children walking around in adult bodies.

Riesel said it better than I could. I have been shooting since 1954, reloading since 1966 and have benefited from information gleaned here about every time I check the forum.

Boss: Beyond being familiar with the Forum Rules, valuing and respecting your time and efforts here, providing financial support, and applying common sense, is there any way we can help reduce your workload here? No one here wants you to burnout or feel that we take you or this site for granted.
 
Like others who posted before me here, I do appreciate all that you do and know it's a thankless job. Hopefully other members will read your post and not ask favors that take time away from your many jobs/responsibilities. Again, my thanks for all you do and I wish you continued success...
 
Boss , I wish to thank you for providing me with this fine site! I know you sacrifice a lot to make it the best site on the web as it has grown from the time I signed up. It saddens me that people think they can "demand" anything from you!!! After all where else do you get this high quality information for FREE!!! I feel that many of the "Long Time Members" would agree that you do a fine job steering the ship. Again Thank you for your effort. Ken Sommerville
 
One fellow said I had “a lot of gall” to have limits on the number of free classifieds. I responded that Silver level is just $20 per year or thirty-eight cents per week. [It is now $25 in 2022.] He answered “why should I pay a penny for what i can do [i.e. selling] on other forums for free?!” I then said “Fine, since you ascribe no value to this Forum, I will just terminate your account.” He then texted — “You can’t do that, it’s not fair! It’s discrimination!”

I smiled as I selected “BAN member” and clicked on “forever”.

Banning guys like that is actually one of the few truly satisfying things I get to do...
