Merchant Mariners

After graduating from high school, my father went on to work
the Lake freighters on the Great Lakes up until WW2 where he
joined the 190th field artillery battalion, assigned V-Corp artillery.

I have most of his papers and log book of "Continues Discharge"
with boats listed passage of work. Listed, ordinary seaman, coal
passer, oiler, and firemen. Papers are stamped "US dept of Commerce",
Bureau of inspection and Navigation.....After the war, he re-entered
Great Lakes Marine service, And issued seaman papers from the U.S.
Coast Guard.

Congratulations
Where did they hold the firefighting class?
Good question, KMart. I did mine, decades ago, at the US Navy Firefighting School in Bayonne, NJ, which also trained cadets from the maritime academies. That school got shut down by the sate of NJ, because they thought doing away with a little bit of smoke was more important than saving lives through fire fighting training. And, thanks to that training, I was able to nip an engine room fire in the bud one night out at sea, saving us a potentially major problem.

Everything is in house training here at my company, IMG_20230518_124822938_HDR.jpg
Will say though one of the guys in my class is another vet from the Coast Gaurd and he gives me hell about going from the army to being a boat guy now :D

Channelview Texas btw. Gotta say one of the best companies I've ever worked for
That is only 5-6 miles down river from me.

I thought they may have sent you to Texas A&M Industrial Fire Fighting School in College Station. I went through that school about 10 times (slow learner). They had a ships deck up there at one time and got to see trainees put out a fire there. It looked like the whole front end of a ship. About 20 ft up to the deck.

Where is the bunker gear, flames and smoke?

One of my good friend's son graduated from the merchant Marine academy in NY last year. He's working on the bridge of an oil tanker in the gulf right now, but I think he's looking to pilot larger cargo ships long term.
I'll have to shoot him a text!
