Meopta Love?

Well this as the title says, showing a little love the way of Meopta. I have long had a 6.5-20x50 Zeiss Conquest with a Zvarmint reticle I have grown to be very fond of on my 6mm BR varmint rig. Great optics, the most useable multi crosshair reticle I've ever used for simplicity and spot on accuracy out 600 yards. This is absolutely made by Meopta years ago on their 1" scope tube platform, to Zeiss specs.

So a few months ago I put a new Walnut sporter stock on a heavily customized 580 Remington 22 rimfire. A very special build I had done with the help of Ron Pence using one of his hand cut rifled stainless BR barrels turned to 26" sporter profile, with a heavily customized and plated Remmy 580 single shot action and plated by Bill Franke of Fort Wayne. Needless to say I have a ton of time in this rifle, and his proven itself for over 2 decades.

My delema was replacing a Burris 4-12 compact that has served superbly for years with a scope offering the same 4X for hunting and more top end power for using in some club matches. I started looking at Meopta a few years ago when I was given a chance to use a buddies Bino's, and was very impressed after owning the top end Leica and Zeiss offerings over the years, the Meopta gave a very good of testament to themselves.

So after much research and waiting for months for this Optika5 1" tubed 4-20x50mm scopes with their BDC-3 Illuminated reticle to come back into stock, I finally got my notice last week they were available. for $439.00 I knew they were not going to be the best scope on the planet, but hoped they would be representative of scopes costing a 100 or 200 bucks more.

I was not disappointed! I can not put into words how surprised I was with the optical quality and the reticle in this scope. I have to classify it as perfection in both regards! Right now after getting it mounted, I am still trying to think what better choice I could have made?

This scope has a side parallax that is useful to as close as 10 yards, all the way to infinity. It has the best Illumination I could have wished for, rivaling the Zeiss Duralyte fire dot reticle. Only the very small dot is illuminated on the main aiming point, but will go low enough to not wash out the target long after twilight. It is bright enough to use in daytime hours under heavy canopies in dense brush and on cloudy to sunny days. I have no interest in using illumination in full daylight,, but as I age that might change,,,,, everything else does,,,

I will update this once I get a break in this wind and a trip or two to the range to sight in and run it thru its power settings and repeatability. But as of now, I know for a fact if those items are proven reliable,,,,, I could not have bought a better scope for twice the money, this thing is proving thus far to be a perfect answer for this fine rimfire for use in all activities it can be used for.

I am ready to spring on another for the 460 16" carbine with the same reticle in a 1-6x24 Optika6, their better scope using a 30mm tube. I think if it is just the equal in quality of this scope It would a match made in heaven for that carbine! Picks and range report to follow.

Yeah everything Meopta makes punches way above its price point. Always has. Even their lowest priced optics will compete with glass costing two or three times as much from other manufacturers. Meopta’s current best glass will rival any of the most expensive glass but at half the cost.

Meopta has set the bar for many years but they usually did it from behind the curtains for companies like Zeiss and NightForce. They wear the crown for a while then Swarovski gets jealous very quickly and pulls out their stops to try and beat it.

Meopta has been working on a new “B2” flagship binocular for a few years now. It is a very secretive project and the only details given from their CEO is that the binocular will be “designed to compete with the best glass in the world.” Which was never the intention of their B1 HD or B1 Plus binoculars so him saying that has me pretty excited! With the new Leica HD Noctivid glass and Swarovski NL Pure glass delivering a downright breathtaking view, Meopta knows the bar and definitely has their hands full. But it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if the new B2 delivers a viewing experience that is completely out of this world!

Whenever Meopta introduces a new optic to compete with any manufacturer at any given price point and in any optical category, they hit a home run every time.

I have 2 Meopta scopes. Meostar 4-16*44 R1 and Optika6 4,5-27*50 SFP 4K. For my use Meopta is best choice, price/quality is just best what you can get. I think that here in FInland Meopta is market leader for hunting optics.

I have an Optika6. The glass is so close to an identically configured VX6HD that they have to be side by side to be distinguishable. The negatives of the Meopta are that the power ring is (probably) unnecessarily large, and it's several ounces heavier than the Leupold.

Might be heavier than the Leupold but I bet it’s also built a lot tougher to handle more abuse. I would trust the Meopta any day over a Leupold on a trip where I knew the scope and rifle might get beat around a lot. Leupold scope are lightweight but also quite weak. Can read for days of failures in Leupold VX series scopes due to poor construction, usually the turrets go first.

Yes I gave up on Leupold several years ago, great service, but unfortunately you often need it. Even on their competition series, my opinion id this Opteka5 is equal glass, and hopefully won't have to rely on the customer service,,,,, time will tell.

I seriously think Leupolds are way over rated, but I have certainly owned my last.

Well not an ideal day at the range to test anything, but I had to go pickup a new 6mm BR barrel my smith had finished yesterday and since I had to drive right past the range on the way I decided to at least stop and get this new scope close to zero. This is in no way a test other than to know in these conditions, I can only expect better results as the conditions are as bad as I would ever go to the range in, and worse than I would hunt in. So trust me when I say this can not be worse but will surely be better on any normal or good day!

This was in 30 degree weather with wind gusting 20 to30 mph, and me dressed in a sweatshirt sweat pants and tennis shoes?? Like I said I was on my way to my gunsmiths to pickup a new finished barrel and just had to get it close to zero. I was only shooting at 25 yards, and no wind flags, eyes and nose watering by the time I got a target hung and the rests and rifle out on the bench and my daily ammo out being Wolf Match Target that I hollow point for hunting since this is a hunting rifle!

To start first shot was pretty much in line vertically maybe 1 1/2" right, and about 6" low. Walking the scope down and over, with the wrong front bag on my rest for the narrow forearm on this rifle the second shot was only 1 1/2" high. my second adjustment put the 3rd bullet right in the bullet hole I used for my aiming point. Pretty easy!

So right now I'm feeling pretty good! 3 shots in this gale force wind day and we are zeroed! So I decided to twist the adjustments a little and take a couple shots then turn them back to where they were and see how that worked,,,, 4 shots seemed right, then back and sure enough, right back perfectly in those same bullet holes.

I shot about 20 or 25 shots at another target and every time I moved the adjustments and returned them to their zero the scope performed perfectly! So by now my old azz is getting pretty cold and my intended job was done, but I just couldn't leave yet. So back to the HHR and grabbed another box of ammo. Time to see how it holds zero through its zoom range!

Now this is only 25 yards, but in this wind with no wind flags and gusts blowing hard enough to move the box of ammo on the bench time to time,, I believe it was a proven test! I started on 12x, which would prove to be a dumb move later, but shot 5 shots at the same bull @ 12x, 16x, 20x, and then back to 8x, and finally 4x power, 25 shots in all. I should have shot the 4x and 8x settings first before the hole got so large and I think it would have been easier for my old eye's to center on the bull, but that is hind sight now, and later on a better day we will be playing at 50 and 100 yards later and will remember this.

So I started with an excellent sight picture on this cloudy blustery day with the first 3 shots barely opening the bullet hole up, then the third shot went a bullet hole high right, and the forth about a bullet hole just low of those first three. We go to 16x next and make the three hole group just a little bigger till the 9 shot cut a hole just low joining the main hole and the lower hole into one. After the 10th shot that by now was just somewhere in the tiny hole that's now one with the single lone shot just high right barely out from the rest.

Time to go to 20X and 5 more shots now finally is just one raged hole with 12 shots in it and getting hard to see the tine black dot on the BDC-3 reticle in this black oversized hole, so time to light it up, I placed the illumination dial on 6, its highest setting and finished the last 3 shots at 20x with no change in the target. This made the liny red dot very easy to see on the black ragged hole I was trying to stay in the center of.

Now it's time to go to 8x, this was when I realized it would have been better start at the lower power since we are shooting my favorite second focal plane reticle, and it is now a bigger dot but still smaller than the single one tore out hole I now have tore out with the first 15 shots to center on. But for the next 5 shots with lighted dot holding center of this hole all I could tell is they were all somewhere inside the dime size hole?

I'm pretty cold now and eyes are watering enough its hard to see and I'm really ready to go, but I still need 5 shots at its lowest setting 4x to evaluate this test. So I dig in now with the center dot covering nearly the entire hole the ammo cut nearly all the way I shot shots 21, 22, and 23 and am now smiling ear to ear knowing this scope is a solid performer and the reticle is not moving and optics are staying centered all thru ought the entire zoom range, when I let shot number 24 go and WTF,,,, eyes watering, shivering like a dog,,, well you know about the razor blades,,,, and now I have a single bullet hole still well inside this 1 1/4" bull just high out of the hole the other 23 shots are in,,,,, oh well, time to load the last shot of this 25 round test and take the results it gave me, sure enough right back somewhere with the first 23 shots??

All in all pretty dang happy, and 100% confident this scope is repeatable, and holds zero at any power from 20x to 4x reliably! After about 12 shots I could only tell the next 13 except for the one flyer were somewhere inside the single ragged hole the wolf ammo had made? Was that one flyer the ammo, not sure it ain't Lapua Midas I was shooting,, my shivering,,,,,, the watering eyes, wind???? or whatever, but I can confidently say after setting the scope back to 16x and firing one more round back where I started, and not knowing exactly where in that ragged hole it was I knew, even with the single unaccounted for shot, I had 26 rounds that would all have been headshots on a squirrel.
New Meopta 4-20x50 day 1.jpg

That is a dime size group, and can completely cover 25 shots and still touch all 26 shots with the top and bottom bullet just hitting the edge of the dime,,, not bad in this wind with rejected Lapua ammo!

Yes this scope is for real! It performed as good as my NF, or GE, and will be every bit as good of a hunting scope my Zeiss is on my 6BR! To say I am happy with this new scope is an understatement! I am delighted, and pleasantly surprised at everything from the optical quality, to the reticle, and now know it performs as well as the very best scopes made with a perfect illumination system definitely better than the Leupolds I've owned, or Vortex Vipers and older Razors!

My suggestion is if you need a good hunting scope on a 22, with the ability to double as a target scope now and then, I would look no where else, as I consider this perfection for this rifle and anything it can be used for! I could not find a better scope for 1000 dollars that could do anything better than this scope does, and probably still not have better optics, and no way it could have a better reticle for target or hunting! I also have to mention how easy and forgiving the eye box is on this scope and how easy it is to get behind this scope at every zoom level, something most scopes even twice this price suffer at!

It was worth my wait to get ahold of this fine Optika5 4-20x50mm with the illuminated BDC-3 reticle, and I can not find one thing to complain about! I could do like some and say it has to big a zoom ring, or it could be lighter, or the supplied zoom throw lever looks cheap, but the fact is every one of those things are what makes it the solid platform and easier to use tool it is! I'll take it, as well as all the things does better than most scopes costing 2 to 3 times more money, with nothing more to offer but possibly smaller or light????

Cool review and testing! Wait for the scope checker snobs to bomb on you because no scope review is worthy unless you scope check it.

I am waiting for the Meostar B2 15X56 binos...

Ya there are shooter and then there are wanna bees that spen more time testing chit they will never use in the field and remain clueless the majority of their shooting lives! At 67 years yound I learned a long time ago shooting competition extreme accuracy BR, what happens on the range and in the field are what matters, and this thing will give me exactly what I want when I tell it to do it every time!

But make no mistake you won't find better for twice the money, 2K quality from any other manufacturer for less than 5 bills!

I shoot the finest DSLR Cameras and glass in the world, as well as have owned the finest shooting glass in the world, they can do what they want to try and discredit any review, but some of us really have been there,,, done that,,,, and understand what works better and why! Trust me, this is a real sleeper in the shooting glass world!!!

Knocking this scope is like pulling up next to a COPO Camero for the first time in your GTO Road Runner or 442 and revving your engine wanting to impress someone,,, you soon find out you just overloaded yer canary azz!!! Now, how many remember them day's,,,,,, ;)

Ok, this reminds me of the Arken SH4 Gen II comparisons where the glass is really good, but looking through these models causes me anxiety with such a tight eye box. I get a nano second of perfect sight picture every 3 seconds. Good to hear the Meopta doesn't suffer this problem.

This one thing I was really leary about, I have seen some top tear scopes that were as you are saying, if you can't get perfectly behind them in the exact spot they are worthless! This is hard to do every time on different benches, let alone doing it in real hunting situations in the field!

I should have mentioned it earlier in my post as this is one the more important aspects of any optic in my opinion, they ain't much use if they build them difficult to use at the moment of truth. It also makes them less desirable to spend any range time with when the fatigue the eye to use them. Trust me this is more important at my age with aging optical system damage from decades of welding and having particles taken out of my eyes over the years fabricating as an Ironworker for 47 years.

Trust me this scope is as easy to get behind as the most expensive lower powered scopes even at 20X and stays optically sharp all thru the power settings,, at least around the reticle where I use them. I really can't comment on the edges, as I never really pay any attention to rifle scope other than aiming at the center for both target and reticle. I just never thought about using or testing anything I never intend on using?

I love the optika 6... Only bad thing i got say is its a lil heavy. Other than that works great tracks great and has plenty of elevation.

I only have one Meopta. It’s an Optika6 2-10x42 PA Rimfire. It’s probably the best money I’ve spent on a scope.
That is an Optika5 in the 2-10 rimfire, another great choice for a 22 rimfire for hunting. The Optika6 is a 30mm main tube which would be a much heavier scope as well, and not available in the power range.

I almost bought that scope instead just to get the smaller objective and the weight savings. But I needed a little more power for using this rifle in some local club matches. Which this BDC-3 reticle is proving excellent for, as well as hunting with the very well low light controlled illumination.

Based on your recommendation, I just bought and mounted a 5-30/56 Optika6. Looks pretty amazing. Can't wait to shoot it Friday
