To Forum Boss and/or Moderators,

As a paying member of this forum, I think that all posts I make or have made are in part my property and should be available to me as "Your Content" even if the thread has been removed by the thread OP or any of you from public view. I put a lot of effort and research into the content of many of my posts. Further, I have shared data representing a significant investment of time and or money in some of those posts.

If any of you believe a post should be removed from this forum completely. Then you should send the posting member an email with the offending post (content and/or link) together with your reasoning and afford an opportunity for rebuttal and retrieval before deletion.

Left click and hold it, drag the curser over everything you wrote, when everything you want to save is highlighted in blue right click the mouse and click on "copy". Then open Word and save it to your computer. Once done this way YOU have a copy that you can keep till the day you die and no one can take it away from you.......problem solved.

Fred, have you considered writing a book? With all that knowledge and expertise you have to share, you could probably sell quite a few copies.

That is a well reasoned and thought out statement of position.

But no. :-)

Unless you copyright your material, once you post it, it becomes part of the public domain and has no protection from copying, resale or publication by anyone. In other words, it ceases to be your "property".

Vinny: I object to this witness being called at this time. We’ve been given no prior notice he’d testify. No discovery of any tests he’s conducted or reports he’s prepared. And as the court is aware, the defense is entitled to advance notice of any witness who will testify, particularly those who will give scientific evidence, so that we may properly prepare for cross-examination, as well as give the defense an opportunity to have the witness’s reports reviewed by a defense expert, who might then be in a position to contradict the veracity of his conclusions.
Judge Chamberlain Holler: Mr. Gambini?
Vinny: Yes sir?
Judge Chamberlain Holler: That is a lucid, intelligent, well-thought out objection.
Vinny: Thank you, your honor.
Judge Chamberlain Holler: Overruled.

My take on what the OP is asking for is not so much that it is his and nobody else can copy or use it, but rather that he wants it to remain at his disposal indefinitely yet on this website. Maybe I am reading his post wrong, but if he just wants it saved I don't understand why he doesn't simply save it himself. Once done, if it disappears then it's his own problem and he does not have to rely on someone else to maintain it's existence. I'd kinda like somebody else to cut my grass too.
Reminds me of my dentist...he told me once that he would "really like to save that tooth" and I said, "yank it out, clean it off and put it in your pocket and keep it till the day you croak, but you get that pain inflicting SOB to hell out of my mouth!!!!!!!"

Suggestion: If you have a long post, with a lot of information, simply copy and paste that into a text file when you write it.

To the original poster:

I know of no Forum on the internet where any member can demand preservation of content. There is no property right of authorship.

For a myriad of reasons, this is simply impractical.

For one, it would simply make management and moderation of the Forum virtually impossible.

Let me lay out some numbers. It is not unusual where whole threads have to be deleted because there is dangerous/incorrect information or the discussion devolves into an exchange of insults. If a thread can't be saved by deleting 4-6 posts, often the whole thing has to go. There is just no other way.

If I or another moderator would have to preserve posts, then send an email with an explanation to every member whose post was modified or deleted, that could easily add hours of labor. For example, consider a thread with 12 posters. To archive individual posts and then notify members, it could easily take 12 x 10 minutes (per member), or 120 minutes or 2 HOURs. And that is potentially for just ONE thread! We might delete 10 threads in a day (although that would be above average). Two hours work for one deleted thread.

Now imagine we decide to prune old threads to enhance site speed and functionality. That is a normal task forum managers do. We might delete hundreds of old threads, each with dozens of people who posted. How could we possibly send emails to every poster about every post that was deleted? Sorry... just can't be done.

Perspective -- Since 2004 I have calculated that I have given over 45,000 man-hours to this site (both Forum and content side). A task that would add even two hours a day to my responsibilities is another 730 hours a year, or 18 more 40-hour weeks. Can't be done. I already work 60-70 hours a week guys.
