measuring scope height with canted rail

question for Litz:

i've never found a official answer to this question. i've always ball-parked it and seems to work most of the time. maybe Bryan talked about it in his books but i don't recall reading it.

so, with a canted rail, where along the action or scope is the correct place to measure?

lately, i've been measuring just before and after the turret and averaging the two numbers.

The technically correct answer is at the muzzle. It's a bit tough to do though, so most people just measure at the scope since it's not that big of a factor.

It doesn't make much difference, but I measure at the turrets, since that's where the adjustment takes place. I measure range to target (when doing a tall target test) and sight height there.
The technical problem with this is that muzzle velocity is measured (or should be corrected to) the muzzle.
Small things that only matter on paper. If you miss a target, it's not because you measured sight height at the wrong place.
Take care,
-Bryan

I read of a formula to use for determining scope height to bore:

1/2 bolt dia + 1/2 scope dia + the distance between the top of the
bolt to the bottom of the scope tube. This does not account for
bases/rails with built in MOA allowances

Hope this helps

For all practicality if you use this method with a 20 or 30 moa base, the amount of error will be extremely small. Most likely lost in the noise of other factors.
