McMillan Stock Heads Up........

STS

I took delivery of a adjustable GPH a couple months ago that I specified front and rear sling swivel studs installed. I have always installed them with escutcheons in the past but decided to let McMillan put them in this time. Fast forward to last week when the rifle went on its maiden voyage coyote hunting. I noticed that the stud in the butt stock was loose and when I got home from the trip I looked at it to see what was going on. To my surprise they had used a machine screw front stud and had it screwed through the fiberglass shell and into the foam filler. The only thing that kept that rifle on my shoulder was those 10/32 (IIRC) threads into foam. That is a major train wreck looking for a place to happen. If you have a McMillan with a rear stud installed by them, I would urge you to investigate, and properly anchor it, before your high dollar scope and rifle take a short trip to the rocks.
EDIT to add that the stock pattern I received is a HTG. That stock used to be called the GPH and I've used them for so long that I still call it a GPH.

I'm kinda with Dusty on the train wreck thing. 23 months ago I ordered this HTG adjustable comb stock with M5 bottom metal inletting. It showed up with BDL inletting. I put it on the back burner for awhile and reordered last December. 5 months later it showed up with the correct M5 bottom metal inlet but without the adjustable comb. Stock #3 showed up 2 months ago with the correct bottom metal and the correct comb.

The best way to get a McMillan is with pilot holes for the action screws so you can do your own pillars correctly. The external knurling on their molded in pillars ends up being the only contact....no bedding material around them. Same deal with sling studs/swivels...just do your own the way they should be.

They are still a viable option but do your home work and accept the fact that they need some massaging. If you can't do the work yourself, figure that into the total cost.

Good shootin' -Al

The last 6 or so stocks I’ve gotten for hunting rifles from them have had plenty of issues reminds me of manners stocks never have gotten the right thing the first time.

I don't buy many stocks but, except for them having stopped inletting one of my favorite stocks, my experience with McMillan has been good.
