McGowen barrels

I have two McGowen barrels on Savage actions. The first was a 22-250 which shot great from the start with several 100 yard groups 3/8" or less. I then purchased a 6.5-284 barrel for a LA Savage. The first groups I shot were okay but not really what I was expecting. I broke down and got a 5.5-22 56mm Nightforce scope for it and put the scope on the rifle in my office. I didn't have a wrench handy to tighten the scope to the base. I took the rifle out and the groups were horrible. I contacted Dennis at McGowen outlet and he sent me a bunch of load recommendations and said if I couldn"t get it to shoot to send it back for them to evaluate it. I had ordered a 20 moa base from Nightforce and when I went to put it on I realized I had not tightened the base. Talking about feeling dumb. After torquing it the first 100 yard group was .45" and 1.25" at 300 yards. Needless to say I am thrilled but I wanted to say how happy I am with the products and the service that McGowen and Dennis have provided. Great products and great people.

We all have our moments. Just the other day I was making up loads to test in a hunting rifle. I had charged the cases and seated the bullets in two rounds before realizing I didn't seat primers ::)

As for McGowen. Both the barrels I had from them were shooters :)

And you kept wondering where those little sprinkles of powder were coming from. ???

At least that's what I was thinking when I did the same thing. Been there, done that.
