Max COLin Winchester 70 (current versions) .308 short action

Have looked for this but haven’t been able to find it.

What is the longest cartridge over all length that will fit & feed in Winchester 70 (current version) .308 short action?

Wondering about a .338 Federal with long mono bullets, seated out so doesn’t sit past cartridge neck.

Cutting Edge Bullets has a .338 176gr bullet that’s 1.560 OAL.

Wondering about long bullets seated out longer than standard 2.80 COL.
Would be custom barreled.

I know could use 30-06 long action, but really don’t need quite that much length.

So wanted to find out length of M70 .308 size short action max COL.

Cheers, Allen

I haven't specifically looked at a post 2006 SC built M-70 short action. However, I have the later M-70 long actions, and they have the same magazine lengths as the New Haven models.

If that holds true for the shorts, then based on my New Haven CRF 300 WSM short action, the mag lengths for the SC CRF M-70s is just a tad over 3".

They come with a spacer and ejector that limits you to the nominal 2.8". With removal of that spacer and some very light modification to the ejector you can run approximately 3.050".

Thanks guys. That would be plenty to seat longer bullets out a ways and not go much if any (depending on specific bullet OAL) past neck shoulder.

I would prefer to use short.308 action rather than long action.

It’s one of those things where a little more room would be nice, but don’t really want more than needed or useful.

Cheers, Allen
