Mauser Safety issue

I have inherited a Mauser-Werke model 3000 in 30-06. While going over the rifle / cleaning, I discovered that the safety will not engage, whether the bolt is cocked or not. Any ideas and/or recommendations on what to do as far as trouble shooting it. I don't mind sending it off either, but would like to learn within limits. Thanks for any reply's.

Well, next question is: Is there a recommended smith that will work on such a rifle? I know the rifle isn't worth much, but would like it to be functional.

I'm not familiar with that particular rifle but from what I could locate for pictures of the safety, other than a different looking shroud, it appears to have a normal safety that when engaged moves the cocking piece to the rear about .010-.015 to dis-engage the sear and lock out the firing pin. It could have an issue with needing to be polished slightly to allow the safety to engage the cocking piece. See if you can PM "bob the nailer" on this forum. He has a lot of Mauser experience and may be familiar with this particular rifle. If he can't help shoot me a pm & we'll go from there. I'm sure that it is fixable.

Another thought, it takes more than slight finger pressure to rotate the safety to the on position. I'm not sure how many #'s is required but you need to firmly lift on it with your thumb/forefinger combo. Bolt must be cocked.

I have no ideal what others do to solve this problem. If it was an old Mauser with the military safety I would pad the cocking piece with a small piece of leather then I would start pulling the cocking piece back to determine the travel before the safety could be engage.

Or I would remove the bolt then move the cocking piece back far enough to engage the safety. After engaging the safety I would install the bolt then pull the trigger. To be clear, the trigger should not be engaged but if it is the firing pin will fall when the safety is released the trigger must be moved back or the safety must engage sooner/moved forward.

What does that mean? The safety is too fat/thick.

A tool can be made to cock old Mausers, I am told soldiers in the old days used the rim of a case in the slot on the left side: to me that is a rather awkward method. I believe I would need 4 hands to check safety engagement.

There is no shortage of Mauser safeties around here. I know: there are matching numbers. I have access to 500 plus, I have no fewer than 40 with three right hand safeties.

That is the exact rifle

I would suggest you learn how to remove the bolt. The cock on open must place the cocking piece behind the trigger. “That is the reason” It is suggested the Mauser bolt be installed with the safety engaged, If the safety is correctly installed there will be a no load situation on the trigger until the safety is releases. If the trigger is pulled and then the safety released the firing pin should not fall.

A Warning: never try this with a loaded rifle. Again, there are shortcuts, I have no problem padding the padding the cocking piece with a piece of leather and then use a pair of pliers to pull the cocking piece/firing pin back far enough to engage the safety. If you were in the habit of measuring before and again after you could measure the protrusion of the cocking piece before and again after to determine the amount of fitting is necessary.

The last time: I sent three safeties to Michigan, a shooter was having the same problem. I instructed him one safety would not work, I suggested one would almost work and the third could not fail to fit.

I did suggest the safety should have a no lode situation on it when the safety was correctly fitted because the load would be on the trigger.
