Mauser Re-barrel???

The Mauser 98 that I have is chambered in 7x57. Its been sporterized. Different stock, front and rear sights taken off. I guess I should have told the guys that replied to my earlier post (22-243????). I ordered a 5 contour, 1-9 twist, CM Shilen barrel from Brownells. Its here finally. would like to do my own chambering, threading, crowning. I have my own lathe so thats not a problem. I have cut several threads also. I also have the tools to thread the barrel properly. I just need some help with the smithing part. All suggestions appreciated....My ears are not sensitve either. Just like to do this myself for the experience and enjoyment and completing this project. I also thaught about doing some or a lot of "Practice" chambering with some bar stock. To get a feel for what I am up against...Thanks a lot...msr243ai

There are several ways to skin this cat. I will again reccomend "The Complete Illustrated Guide to Precision Rifle Barrel Fitting" Book by John L. Hinnant. The drawings will give you a lot to think about even if you use other techniques.

Make sure that you are comfortable cutting threads before you put the barrel in the lathe and have figured out all of the measurements that you need to make before you begin.

PM me if you get stumped

Buy a lathe, buy the book, buy a barrel. All three will give you hours, if not years of enjoyment and a sense of accomplishment.

Smartflix has some good rental videos by Gordy Gritters, Richard Franklin, and Darrel Holland. They cover the whole operation from bare blank to polishing. None of the videos I rented showed the chambering of a Mauser barrel. I also have the Hinnant book and it has all the info on installing a barrel on a Mauser action.

Warning, it also becomes addicting.
Boy, you ain't kidding! Every time I look at a raw piece of steel, I wonder what part is lurking inside of it just waiting for someone to peel away all of the chips that keep it hidden.

Be aware that the military actions have 55 degree threads. 1.1 x 12 on large ring & .980 x 12 on small ring. Unless you plan on re-cutting the reciever threads, you will get much better thread engagement on 55 degrees. I would also recommend (if you are going to get addicted) on buying a threading tool with interchangeable inserts. If you happen to break a point(which happens) you can change the insert & not have to pick the thread back up. It will be $ well spent.

I will raise the BS flag on that comment,. Thousands of 60deg barrels on Mausers with no problems. This turns out to be an old wive's tale with no credible backing.
