Mauser re-barrel question

I have a customer that wants a Mauser action re-barreled. Looking at a take off barrel he supplied for a different action, there appears to be 3 surfaces? I'm seeing that I need to cut the tenon so that the inner and outer ring contact, typically most are saying to cut the tenon about .002-.004 long and get a good crush fit. The only thing I'm not sure about is the smaller "C" at the breech face. (in pic) seems to have a stick-out of .045-.048 from the breech face.

This barrel is from a M48 Yugoslavian intermediate action. The Yugo's saw the need for whatever reason to add the "Safety Breech" design into their rifles. The bolt is also slightly different in that the little nubs that holds the rim of the case opposite of the extractor are shorter than on an M98.

If you are fitting this barrel to an m98 then just machine the safety breech off and set your tenon length and headspace. If you are putting another barrel on the M48 then duplicate the Safety Breech.

There are guys who eliminate the safety breech and machine it like a standard M98, I choose to keep it the way it was designed.

Here is a safety breech I did for a Mauser I built in 7.62x54R, This pic was taken before I cut the extractor slot.

If you had an M98 and an M48 with the barrel off to compare, You stick the bolt in and close it you will see the bolt nose sits farther back in the Yugo than on the M98, So if you look the yugo with the barrel installed, You will see the safety breech fits inside the C-ring of the action and takes up that space, So eliminating it like some people choose to do leaves another approximately 0.050 of unsupported case sticking out.

I don't like that so I duplicate the way it was designed, If somebody is doing it for themselves, That's one thing, You do it for a customer and they lose an eye, Well now your A@@ is in a sling.

One more thing I forgot to mention, Mauser threads are 55 degrees instead of 60 degrees, You can get a tool holder and inserts on Ebay that work very well from a company called Hartwana. Or you can just use the 60 degree inserts that you already have, That's what most people do. I use the 55 degree tool.

Many aftermarket pre machined barrels came machined at 60 degrees, So it does work sufficient enough.

An M43 is a Spanish Mauser that should be the same as any M98, Sorry I have been gone all day.

So yes, The breech end will be flat, No Safety Breech.

If he wants that barrel on it, I think I would find another barrel, If there is enough room to set the tenon length for a standard M98 all you have to do is machine the safety breech off, Then set the tenon length, Then set the headspace all at the same time of clocking the barrel for the sights to line up. Might be doable if you don't need the sight to clock at top dead center.

Those M48 barrels can be very accurate and most of them look like new inside. I have shot a 3/4 moa group at 200 yards with one that was scoped of course.

Before you cut your threads, Put a nice chamfer on the breech end of the tenon so it doesn't bottom out in the corner of the C-ring. Look at my barrel pic, You will see a nice chamfer.

He has a chrome moly contoured blank 7mm barrel he want's chambered to a 7mm Mauser cartridge. If this one doesn't work for him, he's willing to purchase a new barrel.

I don’t know if this helps, but I did a 98 Mauser Project a while back, and went all out.
It’s a pretty long thread, but lots of good info. The rifle shoots great.

Every Intermediate length 98 I've seen, 24, 24/47, 48, is 8 x 57mm (the Mex and Peruvian are a different kinda critter),,,,, so it won't be that take-off that is piced, with the safety breech, if he wants a 7 x 57mm. To me, seems counter productive to use a military take-off, unless it is for a restoration project. But, "Every body's got an idea!" Those Yugoslavs are tough actions. Not the prettiest, but some of the toughest. Interesting note, there are two model 24, a standard length and an intermediate length. The "intermediate" is the one with the 'safety breech' feature.

The Siamese Mausers used the "safety breech" also.
Actually, They have the reverse of the safety breech, There is a shallow counterbore and an extractor cut very similar to the Pattern 14 Enfield. They also have 1 inch 14 tpi instead of 1 inch 12 tpi.

Well, it's their version of a safety breech, since they both used rimmed cartridges.

Not using that barrel anymore. He has a chrome moly contoured blank 7mm barrel he want's chambered to a 7mm Mauser cartridge. If this one doesn't work for him, he's willing to purchase a new barrel.
