Mauser k98k safety

I have a parts k98k that when you put it on safety, either position, and pull the trigger the sear/trigger lets go of the cocking piece. And then when you rotate the safety back to fire, the cocking piece/firing pin lets go and fires the gun. The only thing holding it is the external safety collar. The trigger is loose and flops around after it's pulled with the safety on. Could this be a weak trigger spring ?

If it's the original military trigger, there needs to be a very strong, short coil spring in front of the pin that holds the trigger assembly to the receiver. Without it the trigger sear will not maintain engagement with the firing pin sear. It may sometimes catch, but usually won't. Also, if you can find a picture of the military trigger, compare it to the trigger on your rifle and see if there is any visible difference.

Good luck, Tom

Thanks Tom, that has to be what it is. It is indeed a military trigger, and although the spring is still pretty stout if you try to compress it, there seems to be quite a bit of sideways flex toward both ends. I ordered a new spring kit from Wolff, hopefully that will solve the problem.

And I learned another valuable lesson on this firearm, function check everything before you take it in !

Many Thanks,
Doug

Installed a new Wolff spring kit today, including the firing pin spring, and the bolt shroud locking pin spring on the k98 Mauser. The trigger spring was probably an 1/8 or so longer than old one and much stiffer, so I thought problem solved. It still does it ! You can tell, feel and hear that it's now just ever so slightly slipping off. It done it with the old firing pin spring also, so I changed it out and the shroud spring just to see. Didn't believe they'd make a difference and they didn't.

What about if I just ever so slightly stoned off some of the first stage of the trigger cams ? To make the reach for the 2nd stage just a little more. Or could it be the bolt shroud or cocking piece or safety lever are just wore down enough to have just a little to much slop in them ? You can see that the cocking piece isn't jumping nearly as far forward when you work the safety as it was. And the firing pin used to visibly move as you pulled the trigger with safety on when the sear lets go. If it moves now it's down to 1,000's.

Many Thanks
Doug

Doug,

It appear to me that either the Trigger Sear or the Cocking piece Sear were either shortened, or stoned too much as to be now too short and orobably out of square.
The two surfces only work well when square.

Altering the first pull cam will probably not cure the problem. It is to determine which part has been 'modified' and change it, or have the contect surface re-done to size by adding metal.

Yes that's the same conclusion I've came to. I took it out and shot it today, and function tested it working the bolt alot just to see what it would do. Twice out of like 30 or 40 tests the sear held. And after alot of examining of the sear/ cocking piece/ trigger I believe the surfaces are just to worn down/out of square as you mentioned.

Almost as soon as I typed it I started thinking taking more metal away was a bad idea ! I believe I'm going to have to add. Many thanks Doug

Well I finally got it, I took cocking piece and hit it on the sear with just a spot of weld. After some tedious grinding filing, and stoning. I finally got it to where it works like a new one. The cocking piece won't slip off the trigger on safety no matter how hard you pull it. Trigger pull is just a little rough, but it'll wear in I'm sure. Just hope the weld holds up.
