Mauser ID

I have this Mauser sporter that's been sitting in my safe for almost 10 years. I bought it at an auction cheap and was told it was an 8mm Mauser. It most definitely will not chamber one. Anyone able to provide some insight based on the markings?

You say it won't chamber .... are you feeding it from the magazine ?
I have a Mauser (different than yours) and the extractor will not snap over the case when dropping a case into the chamber and trying to close the bolt.
It will only chamber when fed from the magazine.
Maybe yours is the same.

Did you check the bore size, 7x57 instead of 8x57?

The barrel is marked 8 kal, 46. Could it be the 8.15 x 46mm target cartridge? Civilian ownership of 7.9mm/8mm mauser calibres was limited by Versailles.

That's what I was originally thinking. Unfortunately, info on it seems to be kind of scarce. I don't have anything on hand to slug it, but it seems close to 30 cal. It will not swallow a 30 cal bullet like my m48a will

Take a chamber casting . It could be almost anything.
Looks like a gunsmiths attempt to have a legal 8 mm . 46 could obviously be the length .
